Decanter, February 2019

Caparzo's Riserva blends the cream of the crop of their vineyards in both the north and south of Montalcino. It spends one year in tonneaux and two years in 30hl French oak casks. It starts off all pretty and red-fruited...

jamessuckling.com, February 2019

Beautiful core of ripe fruit and intensity with cherries and plums and hints of cedar and flowers. Full-bodied, tight and focused with a polished texture and length. Solid and gorgeous. Drink or hold.

Vinous, March 2019

(93+ points) Moderately saturated red-ruby. High-pitched aromas of red berries, violet and peppery spices. Sappy, penetrating red/blue fruit flavors pick up spiciness and flintiness with aeration. Finishes very long, with...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, March 2019

The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a terrific wine that feels very connected to its territory, both stylistically and in terms of its personalty. This is a mid-weight effort with a streamlined mouthfeel that...

Wine & Spirits, April 2021

This Riserva is round and polished, with a core of fresh-red-cherry and cherry-liqueur flavors buoyed by bright acidity. Firm tannins sculpt the flavors like fired clay, and the wine finishes on a slightly astringent note...

Tenuta Caparzo is a Tuscan wine estate in the Montalcino region known for its signature Brunello di Montalcino ‘Vigna La Casa’. It was founded in the late 1960’s by a group of friends who bought an old ruin with vineyards in Montalcino. The farm estate was renovated, modernized and planted with new vineyards.

In 1998, Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini, who owns the neighboring Altesino, purchased Caparzo and she immediately carried out her objective of combining tradition and innovation with the help of her son Igino and daughter Alessandra.

Caparzo, derived from “Ca’ Pazzo” as shown on some ancient maps, covers an overall surface area of 200 hectares. It includes 90 covered by vineyards, distributed over different hillsides in the borough of Montalcino. The vineyards are at a heights ranging from 720 to 985 feet above sea level. The soils ranges between sandy-clay, shale-clay (marl), shale-renaceous rich in skeleton, and sandy-stony. The exposure of the vineyards, the nature of the lands and the microclimates of the areas give fullness, age-ability and character to the Caparzo wines.

Caparzo's Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is only produced in the finest vintages and from grapes selected personally by winemaker Massimo Bracalente. The grapes are in part from vineyards located in the northern part of the Montalcino appellation, at an elevation of 720 feet, and in part from vineyards south of Montalcino, at an elevation of 885 feet. In both cases the vineyards are on sandy-stony, south-southeast facing Pliocene terrains.

The first Caparzo Riserva Brunello di Montalcino DOCG was produced in 1980. The wine has the capacity to age for up to 40 years.
