This pure expression of Merlot is generous and round with luscious layers that come forward one soft wave at a time. Perfectly ripened cherry, blackberry, spice, toasted almond and grilled Mediterranean herb form a seamless composition. This is one of the best editions of Poggio Ai Merli that I have tasted. The intensity is stunning and the velvety nature of the mouthfeel is impeccable. It is textured, structured and beautiful. This is a bottle for the cellar. - Monica Larner

A full-bodied red with dark chocolate, dried fruit and hints of vanilla. Soft and velvety. Lots of bright and beautiful fruit. Impressively structured. A glorious pure merlot.

A dark, sensual wine, the 2013 Poggio ai Merli (Merlot) offers lovely depth and fine overall balance, with beams of acidity and minerality that play off the intensity of the dark fruit. Dark red cherry, plum, smoke and mocha add nuance on the voluptuous, racy finish. The Poggio ai Merli is the one wine in the range that feels a bit ripe and heavy within the context of Castellare.

It is a deep brooding wine on the savory spectrum, showing dried herbs and fresh turned earth. With aeration it unravels to reveal sweet cherry notes with lifted floral notes that position nicely against the more savory elements and are carried through to the finish with well integrated sturdy tannins and excellent acidity to keep things fresh. This will reward patience and should be left alone for another 3+ years and should be spectacular for the following decade plus. A very young, but wonderfully crafted wine.

Castellare

Poderi Castellare di Castellina is a Tuscan wine estate located in the heart of the Chianti Classico area, close to the village of Castellina. It was formed in 1968 by the consolidation of five farms. Since the last 70’s, the estate has belonged to Paolo Panerai who also owns Feudi del Pisciotto, Gurra di Mare in Sicily, and a joint venture with Domaines Barons de Rothschild in Maremma called Rocca di Frassinello.

Castellare has roughly 33 hectares of vineyards, 12 hectares of olive-groves, 15 hectares of mixed cultivation, and also forest. Vine age is between 5 and 30 years. Ideal exposure to the sun, good drainage, a mixed ground of calcareous marls, galestro and little clay give both red and white wines structure and depth for a long aging in bottle.

In addition to the flagship wine, I Sodi di San Niccolo, the estate produces Chianti Classicos, Riservas, varietal and white wines.
