(AG90-92 points) Red stone fruits, crushed rocks, mint, flowers and white pepper burst from the 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaut St. Jacques. Explosive and intensely mineral, the 2013 is another wine that shows the more austere side of the vintage. It will be interesting to see if the 2013 fleshes out in bottle. Today it is a bit more compact than is typically the case.

A more deeply pitched nose is comprised of plum, earth, sandalwood, spice and plenty of sauvage character. There is fine volume and intensity to the delicious medium weight flavors that exude plenty of minerality onto the firm and muscular finish where the wood suggested by the nose resurfaces. This structured effort is very Lavaut in style and should age well as the balance is solid. 2025+

A step up in density and sweetness from the village and 1er Cru bottlings. Distinctly chewier wine with savory red fruit flavors lifted by a mineral component. Finishes with serious, tactile tannins that reach the front teeth. Classic 2013 in style, with solid mid-palate material to support its firm spine. Leaves the taste buds humming.

(WA88-90 points) The 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux St Jacques, which, like all of the crus, is 100% new oak, has a clean, quite linear bouquet with dark berry fruit that at the moment shows quite a lot of wood. The palate is medium-bodied, fleshy in the mouth, with sappy red fruit, the oak better integrated here than on the nose since there is more fruit to carry it on the finish. There is a pleasant spicy aftertaste struggling to express itself under the wood, so hopefully that will surface during bottle age. I remain cautious at the moment. - Neal Martin
