Features ample stuffing, with lots of dark plum sauce, crushed cherry and warm blackberry confiture flavors forming the core. Melted black licorice, plum eau-de-vie and black tea notes fill in the background. Reveals a lovely echo of ganache at the very end. Best from 2018 through 2027. 500 cases imported. –JM

While the cuvée Chaupin comes mostly from sandy soils, the 2013 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée Vieilles Vignes comes more from the rolled pebble soils the region is famous for, and always shows the richer, more powerful profile imparted from these soils. Mostly foudre-aged Grenache, it incorporates 20% Mourvèdre and roughly 10% Syrah (slightly more Syrah in 2013) that’s raised all in barrel. Exhibiting a deep purple color, it offers fabulous dark berry fruits, licorice, Provençal herbs and earthy/stony minerality on the nose. Medium to full-bodied, beautifully concentrated, ripe and with impressive sweetness to its tannin, it's a fabulous wine that will have 10-15 years of overall longevity. - Jeb Dunnuck

Ripe boysenberry and cassis on the exotically perfumed nose, complicated by suggestions of fresh flowers, Indian spices and incense. Sweet, deeply concentrated dark berry, candied cherry and fruitcake flavors show superb energy and a smooth, velvety texture. Really stains the palate but comes off graceful, with serious depth of flavor but no excess fat. Finishes sweet and supple, displaying outstanding persistence and a suave flourish of floral pastilles. - Josh Raynolds

Label

Domaine de la Janasse Chateauneuf-du-Pape comes from four plots of different soil types, that marry perfectly in the finished wine. A southern pebbly soil that brings body and power; a Chaupin-like soil for freshness and acidity; a red clay pebbly soil in the north of the appellation that brings structure and body; and finally a sandy-limestone soil for smoothness.

Domaine de la Janasse

Domaine de la Janasse, in the Southern Rhone, was founded in 1967 by Aime Sabon. Having returned from military service, he took over management of the family vineyards and formed an estate label, named after the family farm in the locality of “La Janasse”. A cellar was built in 1973 and new plots were acquired, growing the total holdings from 15 hectares to more than 90 today.

In 1991, after earning diplomas in viticulture, oenology and marketing, Aime’s son Christophe Sabon was given the keys to the cellar. His sister Isabelle joined the team in 2001.

La Janasse grows all 13 permissible grapes in the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation to give complexity and depth to their different wines. They produce 3 red and 2 white Chateauneuf du Pape wines, red, white and rose Cotes-du-Rhone, and a number of IGP wines.
