(JG89-92+ points) The 2013 Mazis-Chambertin from Domaine Tortochot is a lovely and classic example of this fine vineyard, but it too will need bottle age to integrate its new wood. The bouquet offers up a nascently complex mélange of black cherries, sweet dark berries, grilled meat, dark soil tones, a touch of lavender, woodsmoke, spicy oak and a bit of coffee tones as well from the barrels. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, young and nicely soil-driven, with a good core, tangy acids and a long, chewy and youthful finish. This will be just fine with bottle age, but again (and I hate to sound like a broken record) this could be even better with less new wood.

The 2013 Mazis Chambertin Grand Cru was bottled in December and aged in 100% new oak. Even though there is more new wood than the Charmes, here on the Mazis I find superior integration and it is in sync with the fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with firm but supple tannin, good body and density but with sufficient elegance on the finish. This is a broad-shouldered Mazis-Chambertin that should reward cellaring. - Neal Martin

A more complex nose displays more sauvage character to the ultra-fresh spiced plum and distinctly cool earth-inflected aromas that are trimmed in a deft application of wood. There is that wonderful inner mouth perfume to the detailed and notably more powerful middle weight flavors where the supporting structural elements are more phenolically mature, all wrapped in a backward and distinctly austere finish. 2026+
