(BH89-92 points) Once again strong reduction crushes the fruit on the nose. Not surprisingly the palate impression of the medium weight round and supple flavors is finer than that of the Gevrey villages. There is also slightly better depth on the well-balanced and persistent finish. This should be approachable after only 5 years or so of bottle age yet require up to a decade to reach its full potential. 2021+

Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Craipillot has a classy bouquet. Yes, it is introspective at the moment but there is real complexity here: black plum, wild strawberry and cold stone, very focused and harmonious. The palate is medium-bodied with supple ripe tannin, plenty of juicy red berry fruit mixed with a pinch of sea salt towards the finish. It needs another 2-3 years in bottle, but it should evolve into a very fine Gevrey-Chambertin. This surpasses my expectations from barrel, which is great to see. Tasted September 2016. - Neal Martin
