Offers brilliant, high-toned violet and black currant fruit. Racy and intense, this builds to a long, palate-saturating finish. The aftertaste delivers spice and fruit, but this will require time. (WA91-93 points) The 2013 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has an attractive marine influence on the nose, which takes you straight out to sea. The palate is medium-bodied with much redder fruit than the Gevrey-Lavaux '13: not complex, but nicely balanced with a lithe, harmonious finish that feels gentle, almost understated. I like that. - Neal Martin

(AG89-92 points) A powerful wine, the 2013 Charmes-Chambertin comes across as a touch compact and closed in on itself. Dark red cherry, plum, spice, dried flowers and mint struggle to emerge from a structured frame that seems to be trapping the flavors and textures at this stage. Here, too, the overall impression is of leanness.

(BH88-92 points) There is a discreet but not invisible touch of wood framing the very fresh nose of red and dark cherry along with notes of newly turned earth, humus and a lovely floral hint. Here too there is both fine volume and good energy to the slightly bigger tension-filled flavors that terminate in an ever-so-mildly edgy finish. There is quite a bit of gas present which complicates judging the phenolic maturity of the supporting structure and hence my predicted range is a bit wider than it usually is.

Nicely ripe aromas of black cherry, minerals and licorice. Supple and sweet on entry, then more strict in the middle palate, with its red fruit flavors showing a strong saline element. Sappy and broad but a bit youthfully dry in the early going, finishing with slightly peppery tannins.
