The Fontaine-Gagnard Rugiens is excellent in 2013, offering up a deep and very classic bouquet of cherries, quince, a touch of blood orange, gamebirds, a very complex base of soil tones, woodsmoke and a refined base of new wood. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very soil-driven in personality, with a very fine core, tangy acids, lovely focus and balance and a long, ripely tannic and youthful finish. (WA89-92 points) The 2013 Pommard 1er Cru les Rugiens takes time to open in the glass, but it eventually reveals attractive sous-bois infused black fruit that remains just a little foursquare. The palate is medium-bodied with light sappy red berry fruit, a pleasant line of acidity and just the right amount of salinity on the finish. This is an understated yet well-crafted Pommard. - Neal Martin
