Once again there are traces of menthol and wood spice present on the well-layered and elegant aromas of violets, plum, wet stone and sauvage nuances. There is a refined and restrained palate feel to the mineral-inflected middle weight flavors that possess excellent delineation and a lovely sense of underlying tension on the balanced but notably firm finale. This is good stuff if you have the patience to cellar it for at least 6 to 8 years first.

(89 - 91) The 2013 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru les Poissenots which comes from a south-east facing 0.5-hectare of vines planted in 1959, has a ripe, candied bouquet with fresh blueberry and marmalade scents infusing the red berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine structure, good acidity and a backward, but focused finish. This feels a little taciturn at the moment but there is fine tension here. However, it feels slightly out-classed by its fellow premier crus this year.-NM

The 2013 ‘le Poissenot’ shows a very fragrant and approachable frame that is becoming more typical of the 2013 vintage. Fresh and lively aromas of strawberry, bing cherry and red licorice, followed closely by a framework of savory spice, turned earth and crushed flowers. The palate is medium to full bodied and displays the round character of the vintage with soft, upfront tannins that slowly melt away into fresh acidity that drives the pure fruit through the palate. The mid palate carries the wine into a steep finish with grip and attitude. Drink this now and over the next 10-15 years.
