Coming from the Hilliard Bruce Vineyard in the Sta. Rita Hills and aged 18 months in 40% new French oak, the 2013 Pinot Noir Earth has toasty oak and creaminess in its gorgeous black cherry and dark fruits, earth, spring flowers and forest floor-like aromas and flavors. Showing more spice with time in the glass, it's a brilliant, almost Burgundian-styled Pinot Noir that has solid mid-palate concentration and sound underlying structure. It will benefit from a year or two in the cellar and drink nicely through 2023. - Jeb Dunnuck

The appropriately named 2013 Pinot Noir Earth is the most virile, masculine wine in the range. The appropriately named 2013 Pinot Noir Earth is the most virile, masculine wine in the range. A host of iron, smoke, game and ferrous notes add complexity to the dark red stone fruits, with beams of underlying tannin that provide support. There is no shortage of complexity or personality here, although some of the other wines in this lineup have a certain raciness that is missing here. The Earth bottling is made from the first fruit harvested off the ranch.

Medium ruby. This leads off with a rather expressive nose full of dark cherry and berry notes that are laced with traces of cinnamon and oak spice with an earthy component lurking beneath. This leads off with a rather expressive nose full of dark cherry and berry notes that are laced with traces of cinnamon and oak spice with an earthy component lurking beneath. Medium-bodied on the palate with vibrant red fruit carried through to the finish with a refreshing streak of acidity. There’s plenty of structure here and, while the wine is showing well now, it will certainly blossom with additional age. Best between 2018 -2023.
