(WA90-92 points) The 2013 Volnay Clos des Chenes has the most feminine bouquet of the Volnay '13s, with perfumed crushed strawberry, orange peel and rose-petal scents that render it alluring even at this early stage. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, supple tannins, plenty of fleshy ripe red fruit with a touch of citrus lemon on the finish giving this edge. This is a lovely Volnay that should age with style. - Neal Martin

(BH88-91 points) A more discreet though not invisible application of wood frames the essence of red pinot fruit and soft earth aromas. There is a very suave and opulent texture to the solidly concentrated and mineral-inflected flavors that brim with dry extract that does a good if not perfect job of buffering the firm tannic spine shaping the lingering and complex finish thanks to what appears to be better overall phenolic maturity to the structural elements. 2019+

Dense, sappy and concentrated, with a strong impression of saline extract to the red fruit flavors. The tannins are serious but nicely supported by the wine's material. Serious hail losses here held production to just 15 hectoliters per hectare in 2013, but this is a perfect example of a Côte de Beaune wine that should reward patience.
