The 2013 Lafaurie-Peyraguey disproves the claim that this derided vintage produced no great wines. It was picked from September 26 to October 25 through four tries, cropped at 11.6hl/ha, and matured in 65% new French oak. The residual sugar is 135g/L. This maiden vintage under Silvio Denz is a knockout and also the first bottle to be embossed with the Lalique-inspired glass design. Iridescent in color, the wine is blessed with an exquisite, open, generous bouquet of layered fresh mango, quince and peach. I am most impressed by the clarity and precision, given the intensity of this Sauternes. The palate follows through with vibrant wild honey, clementine and quince notes, all underpinned by razor-sharp acidity that counterbalances the unctuosity on the harmonious finish. So delicious you could broach bottles now, but surely it will age with style. The choice is yours. Tasted from an ex-château bottle sent to my home. -- Neal Martin

This packs some power, with ginger, dried peach and matchstick hints leading the way, but as this moves along, it slowly shows creamier quince, mango and papaya notes, and an alluring chamomile gilding. Still rather backward, so forget this one in the cellar for a bit. Best from 2018 through 2038. J.M.

A layered and structured Sauternes with dried apricot, melon, apple and hints of honey. Full body, very sweet and refined. Phenolic character gives this form and intensity. Very pretty. Fresh finish.

Very sweet attack, silky and almost racy, with fine purity. This has finesse and poise, and the balance and acidity should ensure a good evolution. Slightly exotic and candied with very good length. (WA92-94 points) The Chateau Lafaurie Peyraguey has a mineral-led, citrus-driven bouquet that is tightly wound at first - delicate touches of orange blossom and apricot emerging from the glass. The palate is well-balanced and attired with a mellifluous, spicy entry. There is certainly good weight and concentration here, the finish long and satisfying, perfectly controlled. This is always a dark horse Sauternes and in 2013 they have produced something a little bit special. - NEAL MARTIN

(WE92-94 points) Very tightly textured, this wine is closed, only slowly revealing its power and complexity. The acidity is strongly present, offering freshness at the end.
