Precise and concentrated in its ripe, bright, lemon-fresh and intense Riesling aromas, the 2013 Riesling Smaragd Steinriegl has a full-bodied, highly elegant and densely textured palate with an enormously long and persistent finish. This is an impressive Riesling, full of tension, concentration and energy. - Stephan Reinhardt

Pungent, penetrating lemon zest, horseradish and peach kernel along with a whiff of shiitake on the nose sets the tone for a gripping, firm palate that testifies to small-berry concentration as well as to both long hang time and a bit of botrytis that ensued in the three weeks since the corresponding Federspiel was harvested. Alkaline chalky suggestions underlie and extend the finish--or at least they certainly strike Bodenstein and me as chalky, although perhaps our imaginations are under the influence of geological knowledge. There is scant fleshy peachiness, but I’m happy here for whatever juiciness I can get. Lemon zest further enhances the sense of active, faintly gum-numbing grip. I’d give this formidable, stern stuff a bit more time in the cellar before broaching a bottle. -- David Schildknecht
