This is another great Saffredi following the perfect 100-point 2012. I tasted it a year ago and thought it was sensational. Even better now. It's so dense and structured yet shows a lively, jazz-like vibe that gives it...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, February 2017

There's a lot to say, and admire, about the 2013 Saffredi. First off all, this is the first growing cycle made under the careful watch of enologist Luca D'Attoma. This makes all the difference. One of his changes is an...

Decanter, November 2019

Fattoria Le Pupille, located in the Maremma region of Tuscany, is a leading winery owned by Elisabetta Geppetti, the Ambassador of Maremma and called the Lady of Morellino. As a young student, Elisabetta had foreseen great productive potential in the countryside she loved, and armed with her enthusiasm and love of wine which she inherited from her grandfather, she embarked on a journey to transform her family’s small wine estate into what it is today: 175+ acres of vineyards, more than 500,000 bottles made every year and presence in the markets of four continents.

The core of the property is around the village of Pereta surrounded by 65 acres of vineyard that include 12 acres which give life to the winery’s legendary wine: Saffredi. With the support of Italian wine legend Giacomo Tachis, she replanted Cabernet Sauvignon on a few vines of Sangiovese, which in 1985 started bearing fruit, giving birth to a project that has made the winery the true pioneer of Maremma.

The operating nucleus of the property, from early 2000, is in proximity of Istia d’Ombrone near Grosseto. The winery is an antique farmhouse surrounded by a 30-acre vineyard, including a small patch dedicated to Sangiovese grapes coming from ancient vine rows.

The Le Pupille vineyards are planted to 70% Sangiovese, 10% Malvasia Nera and Alicante, 4% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Merlot, 2% Syrah and 2% Cabernet Franc. There are 23 acres of vineyards for the white grape varieties: Traminer, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.

Introducing the exquisite 2013 Fattoria Le Pupille Saffredi IGT, a red wine hailing from the picturesque region of Tuscany, Italy. This wine is a true gem, crafted with meticulous care and precision by the esteemed Fattoria Le Pupille winery.

With a captivating deep red color, this wine immediately entices the senses. The nose is greeted by opulent blackcurrant aromas, revealing the wine's impeccable ripeness. The palate is rich, broad, and exuberant, showcasing the true essence of this exceptional vintage.

Renowned wine critic James Suckling describes the 2013 Saffredi as "sensational," and it is easy to see why. It boasts a dense and structured profile, yet possesses a lively, jazz-like vibe that adds a unique form and beauty. The blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot grapes creates a powerful and muscular wine that demands attention.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate also highly praises this vintage, giving it an impressive score of 98 points. Enologist Luca D'Attoma's increased focus on Petit Verdot shines through, adding stunning precision, linearity, and balance. The wine's concentration is dark and pleasurable, with a final acidic signature that elegantly seals the deal.

Decanter magazine concurs, awarding the 2013 Saffredi a score of 94 points. They note the wine's forward and approachable style, balanced by good acidity, vigour, and spiciness. While enjoyable now, this wine has the potential to age gracefully, rewarding those who exercise patience.

The 2013 Fattoria Le Pupille Saffredi IGT is a masterpiece that embodies the essence of Tuscany. Its complexity, depth, and harmonious balance make it a true delight for wine enthusiasts. Whether indulging in it now or laying it down for future enjoyment, this wine is sure to leave a lasting impression.
