The 2013 Les St. Georges is outstanding, and as is so often the case here, clearly of grand cru quality in this vintage. The pure, nascently complex and beautifully focused nose wafts from the glass in a mix of sweet dark berries, black cherries, espresso, a beautifully complex base of soil tones, a touch of graphite, gamebirds, woodsmoke and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and rock solid at the core, with great mineral drive, laser-like focus, fine-grained tannins and a very long, tangy and utterly seamless finish. (BH92-94♥ points) The wood is somewhat more in evidence though again it's not so much as to really compete with the plum, black cherry, dark currant and pungent earth-suffused aromas. This also possesses genuinely excellent volume and power as the broad-shouldered flavors possess both fine richness and seriously good mid-palate density on the mineral-inflected and palate coating finish. This has just a bit more acidity than the Les Cailles and it adds to the sense of vibrancy.

Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Saint-Georges has a modest nose of black cherries, raspberry and a touch of bergamot tea. There seems to be some stem addition here, but if so, then it is neatly integrated. The palate is well balanced with supple and quite fine tannin, a keen line of acidity with satisfying tension. It has a modern veneer, especially on the sweet finish, yet there is good quality fruit in situ and it should age with style. Tasted September 2016. - Neal Martin
