Decanter, February 2018

2013 in Tuscany was a more classic vintage, producing wines with some elegance and freshness. There’s a distinct feeling of ‘macchia mediterranea’ about this wine, with notes of green herb, tomato leaf and wild flowers...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, July 2022

This is a vintage that I truly loved, and I'm so happy to come back to it now. The 2013 Redigaffi benefitted from a long growing season with a late harvest that started past the first week of September. Today, the wine is...

Tua Rita, one of Italy’s first successful producers of vins de garage, was founded by Rita Tua and her husband Virgilio in 1984. They started with just 2 hectares of vineyard which they tended with scrupulous care. As a result, their vineyard had grown to 9 hectares in barely a decade and today, Tua Rita farms some thirty hectares planted to vine.

Tua Rita’s vineyards are located in the Cornia valley near Suvereto in the High Tuscan Maremma, in an area known as Metalliferous Hills. The soil composition of pebbles and stones as well as clay, silt and sand, with a generous helping of mineral trace elements, leaves a distinctive mark on Tua Rita’s wines, imparting unique iron-like nuances to the aromatics and lending the palate a delicious hint of saltiness.

This leading Tuscan estate is known for their famous 100% Merlot, Redigaffi, which has gained cult status, receiving praise and accolades from wine enthusiasts and even a perfect 100 score from wine critic Robert Parker. Their range of wines also includes their signature wine, Giusto di Notri, which is a classic Bordeaux blend; Per Sempre, a single-variety Syrah; Perlato del Bosco, a varietal Sangiovese beginning with the 2011 vintage; Rosso dei Notri, an entry-level wine; Lodano, an experimental white wine; and Perlato del Bosco Bianco.

Tua Rita’s single-variety Merlot takes its name from a stream that runs near the estate. Redigaffi is a benchmark wine that has achieved cult status around the world. The 2000 vintage was the first wine from Italy to be awarded 100/100 by Robert Parker. Redigaffi features regularly in the catalogues of the world’s leading auctioneers, such as Christie’s and Sotheby’s, and is one of the few Italian wines included in the Liv-ex index.

The wine ages 18-20 months in new French oak barrels and then several months in bottle.

The 2013 Tua Rita Redigaffi is a remarkable Italian red wine that truly showcases the exceptional quality of Merlot from Tuscany. With its deep red color and enticing aromas, this wine is a true delight for the senses. The label features an elegant image that hints at the sophistication and complexity that lies within the bottle.

On the nose, the Redigaffi reveals perfumed notes of rose petals and sandalwood, intertwining with captivating scents of blackberries, thyme, peppercorns, and slate. These aromas create a symphony of fragrances that draw you in and invite you to explore further.

Upon tasting, the wine envelops the palate with a lovely, supple, and soft texture, yet it remains firm in its tannin structure. The flavor profile is incredibly layered, with a beautiful interplay between the fruit and herbaceous notes. As you savor each sip, grilled-herb and espresso undertones emerge, adding depth and complexity to the wine. The finish is nothing short of fantastic, leaving a lasting impression that lingers long after the last drop.

Renowned wine critic James Suckling awarded this vintage an impressive score of 97. He praises its texture, layered flavors, and remarkable length, recommending it for immediate enjoyment or further cellaring. Monica Larner from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate also raves about the 2013 Redigaffi, highlighting its fresh and vibrant nature, sweet cherry concentration, and the potential for future evolution.

Further accolades come from Decanter, which awarded the wine a score of 97 as well, noting its elegance and freshness. They describe the wine as powerful yet beautifully structured, with flavors ranging from sweet tobacco and oak spice to ripe black fruit and sappy green herbs. Wine Spectator also sings its praises, awarding it 95 points and highlighting its plush, flashy character, dense texture, and hedonistic style.

Overall, the 2013 Tua Rita Redigaffi is a wine that embodies the essence of Tuscan Merlot, combining elegance, complexity, and remarkable aging potential. It is a true gem that will undoubtedly impress even the most discerning wine enthusiasts.
