It changes all the time and is very complex with hints of meat. On the palate it's full-bodied and very well refined, showing wonderful tannin tension and polished texture. It closes with an amazing finish that lasts for minutes and turns to pure fruit. Better in 2018 but a fabulous young wine to taste now. A modern example of the legendary 1997 but more elegant.

This is a phenomenal Merlot that offers so much intensity and generosity. These traits don't come easy and great risk is taken to give the grapes as much time as needed to ripen on the vines before harvest. Aromas of dark cherry, spice, wet earth and grilled herb are developed with stunning focus and precision. This is a thickly layered wine that literally sticks to your gums with gripping presence and ample power. The alcohol is is high and so is the dry extract, but both elements are well balanced and integrated. Ultimately, more importance is given to the complexity of the bouquet and it's fluid, ever-changing behavior. This wine just begs to be consumed, but bigger rewards await those who have the patience to wait. Don't miss this beauty. - Monica Larner

There’s a distinct feeling of ‘macchia mediterranea’ about this wine, with notes of green herb, tomato leaf and wild flowers. It's still quite dense and brooding, but with some lighter, leafy notes and a refreshing palate with little, crunchy tannins. There's a lovely range of flavours, from sweet tobacco and oak spice to ripe black fruit and sappy, green herbs. A powerful but beautifully structured wine. Plum, cherry, black currant, cedar, vanilla and toast flavors highlight this plush, flashy red, which is dense, needing time to absorb the oak. Merlot. Best from 2019 through 2028. — B.S.

The 2013 Redigaffi is one of the more understated versions of Redigaffi I can remember tasting. The 2013 Redigaffi is one of the more understated versions of Redigaffi I can remember tasting. If opened young, the 2013 needs quite a bit of air, as it appears to still be recovering from its recent bottling. Dark red cherry, plum, smoke, leather, licorice and spices build to an explosive finish supported by beams of acidity and tannin. The 2013 is still sorting itself out in bottle, so patience is key.

Label

Tua Rita’s single-variety Merlot takes its name from a stream that runs near the estate. Redigaffi is a benchmark wine that has achieved cult status around the world. The 2000 vintage was the first wine from Italy to be awarded 100/100 by Robert Parker. Redigaffi features regularly in the catalogues of the world’s leading auctioneers, such as Christie’s and Sotheby’s, and is one of the few Italian wines included in the Liv-ex index.

The wine ages 18-20 months in new French oak barrels and then several months in bottle.

Winery

Tua Rita

Tua Rita, one of Italy’s first successful producers of vins de garage, was founded by Rita Tua and her husband Virgilio in 1984. They started with just 2 hectares of vineyard which they tended with scrupulous care. As a result, their vineyard had grown to 9 hectares in barely a decade and today, Tua Rita farms some thirty hectares planted to vine.

Tua Rita’s vineyards are located in the Cornia valley near Suvereto in the High Tuscan Maremma, in an area known as Metalliferous Hills. The soil composition of pebbles and stones as well as clay, silt and sand, with a generous helping of mineral trace elements, leaves a distinctive mark on Tua Rita’s wines, imparting unique iron-like nuances to the aromatics and lending the palate a delicious hint of saltiness.

This leading Tuscan estate is known for their famous 100% Merlot, Redigaffi, which has gained cult status, receiving praise and accolades from wine enthusiasts and even a perfect 100 score from wine critic Robert Parker. Their range of wines also includes their signature wine, Giusto di Notri, which is a classic Bordeaux blend; Per Sempre, a single-variety Syrah; Perlato del Bosco, a varietal Sangiovese beginning with the 2011 vintage; Rosso dei Notri, an entry-level wine; Lodano, an experimental white wine; and Perlato del Bosco Bianco.
