Pale lime green in color, the 2013 Monzinger Fruhlingsplatzchen Riesling Grosses Gewachs is very smoky on the nose (almost Coche-Dury-like) and offers pure Riesling flavors along with aromas of limes and grapefruit. If Felsenberg and Felseneck are the mineral rockers of Tim Fröhlich’s stable, the Frühlingsplätzchen seems to capture the more conciliatory aromas of nature in early spring. Flowers on the banks of a mountain stream may sound just a little too far-fetched, but a fragrance of peach and citrus fruit is definitely accompanied by some floral and herbal notes. Gentle, elegant and with a finely woven acidity it certainly exhibits an early seductiveness which the mineral merchants don’t seem to care for. 18/20 (MS)

Subtle apricot and spice flavors are nicely framed by bright minerality. With an elegant saltiness lingering on the complex finish, this wine is typically the most feminine and approachable of the estate's Grosses Gewächs. -- Joel B. Payne
