jamessuckling.com, February 2017

Intense aromas of minerals, chalk, bright cherries and stones. Full-bodied, tight and silky; very linear. Like a straight shot. Give it three to four years to soften. Vibrant is the word.

An enjoyably melted tannic structure, with the white pepper and saffran lick of limestone, sappy rise on the finish, with raspberry, redcurrant, crushed roses, generous and creamy through the mid palate (although you...

Decanter,

Predominantly Merlot. Continues in a classical, elegant mould. Pure and fragrant. Refined tannins and texture. Lovely freshness and length. Structured for ageing but guided by the philosophy of drinkability.

jebdunnuck.com, November 2017

92+ While a step back from the 2015, the 2014 Château Canon is still a strong effort that shows the hallmark elegance of the 2014 vintage. Black raspberries, cherries, exotic spices and lots of floral notes emerge from...

On the fresh, bright, mineral driven side of the style range, with a floral, crushed rock, fennel and cherry core of fruit and spice. Give this at least 5-7 years to come together. Read more...

The Wine Independent, March 2024

The 2014 Canon is deep garnet-brick in color. Broody notions of stewed tea, dusty soil, and fried herbs slowly open out to a core of prunes and dried cranberries with a hint of mossy tree bark. The medium to full-bodied...

Chateau Canon is a famous Saint-Emilion estate widely recognized as one of the best in the appellation. The property started out as part of the Clos St. Martin vineyard with only 30 acres. After purchasing it in 1760, by Monsieur Jacques Kanon expanded the estate and its vineyards but then sold it a decade later to Raymond Fontemoing, a Bordeaux wine merchant.

In 1919, the property came into the hands of the Fournier family who invested a lot of time and money, modernizing the estate and vineyards. It remained in their control until the 1990’s but by that time Chateau Canon was having some serious problems: TCA contamination, vine disease, and subsidence of the quarried cellars beneath the property.

When the Wertheimer family, which owns Chanel, acquired the estate in 1996, it was in a sorry condition and they invested in restoring the full potential of Chateau Canon for Premier Grand Cru Classe wines. A period of extensive renovation and replanting was undertaken. The 18th century residence is now entirely restored to the highest standards.

The estate’s 85 acres are planted to 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc, with the average vine age now close to 30 years. The substantial estate is on Saint-Emilion’s famous limestone plateau close to the town.

Chateau Canon has a walled vineyard at the entrance to Saint-Emilion planted to Merlot. This unique 5,000 square foot parcel is ploughed by horse and hand harvested in traditional style. Its grapes are used in crafting the estate’s Grand Vin.

A blend of 70% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc aged 18 months in French oak barrels, 70% new.

The 2014 Canon, a Bordeaux blend hailing from the renowned Saint Emilion sub-region of Bordeaux, France, is an exceptional red wine that is captivating the discerning palates of wine aficionados worldwide.

This elegant blend represents the epitome of French winemaking expertise, as it combines tradition with an innovative spirit. Its alluring garnet-brick color immediately seduces the eye, hinting at the rich, complex experience that awaits the senses. On the nose, the 2014 Canon presents a well-defined, precise bouquet of ebullient raspberry and wild strawberry, surpassingly infused with minerals for a captivating aroma.

The palate is a meticulously balanced symphony of medium-bodied flavors. It opens with an intense aroma of minerals and chalk, quickly followed by vibrant notes of bright cherries and stones. The fine tannins and well-judged acidity add a dimension of tension and poise to this Saint Emilion, accentuated with a delicate spicy finish that lingers long in the mouth.

The 2014 Canon also boasts a fresh, pure style, with lots of floral and black tea notes out front, followed by a tightly focused beam of red currant, plum, and raspberry coulis flavors. The finish sports a mouthwatering chalky spine and lovely perfume that should develop more with time.

The complexity and nuance of this wine shine more than its power and richness. Earning consistently high scores from leading wine reviewers, the 2014 Canon is a testament to the philosophy of drinkability, offering an extraordinary balance of elegance, freshness, and structure that is destined to age beautifully. Enjoy this vibrant, silky, and linear wine now or give it three to four years to soften and fully reveal its character.
