Vinous, March 2024

The 2014 Léoville Poyferré has a magnificent nose that is a cut above its peers: more concentrated, more delineated and has stunning depth with complexity that only comes through with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied...

Decanter, March 2022

Real perfume on the nose here, so floral with peonies, rich blackcurrants and summer berry notes. Lovely clarity and precision on the palate, soft and delicate with such poise. It's not so expansive right now, a little...

jamessuckling.com, March 2021

A ripe, generous and substantial wine for this appellation with some real concentration. Plenty of beautiful currant and blackberry character, as well as a solid core of ripe, dusty and velvety tannins and enough acidity...

TheWineCellarInsider.com, February 2021

Classic in style, with strong essences of cedar, tobacco and herbs to accompany the crisp red fruits, the wine is medium-bodied, chewy, bright, sweet and fresh. with an herbal and leafy accent to the red fruit in the...

Wine Enthusiast, February 2017

The wine is concentrated with tannins that come from both the firm fruit and the wood aging. It is packed with blackberry flavors that come through the structure strongly. The velvet texture (that is just a hint at the...

Cassis and raspberry fruits, smoked and grilled oak notes, this is highly moreish, a little more savoury in its Cabernet Sauvignon expression than you often find at Poyferré, with raspberry leaf, graphite, undergrowth and...

jebdunnuck.com, February 2018

A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc and the balance Petit Verdot that wasn’t harvest until the middle of October (this is later than most), the 2014 Léoville Poyferré is a ripe...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, April 2017

93+ The 2014 Leoville-Poyferre was surprisingly backward and tight on the nose (usually it is the most expressive and generous Léoville in its youth). The precision and focus is intact, but it is broody and sultry at...

Wine Spectator, January 2017

Very pure, with a beautiful beam of violet and plum sauce carried by a chiseled graphite spine. Gorgeous anise and roasted apple wood notes are inlaid seamlessly on the finish. Shows ample grip and drive...

The Wine Independent, March 2024

The 2014 Leoville Poyferre is medium to deep garnet in color. Notes of warm cassis and dried herbs jump out on the nose, plus suggestions of leather, damp soil, and garrigue. The medium-bodied palate is firm and...

With origins dating back to 1638, Saint Julien's expansive Leoville estate was the largest vineyard in all the Medoc at the time of the French Revolution. After various successions and changes, the estate was eventually divided into the three Leoville properties we know today: Leoville-Las-Cases, Leoville-Barton, and Leoville-Poyferre, established in 1840. The outstanding quality of Leoville Poyferre wines gained early recognition when it was ranked second growth in the 1855 Classification.

The various divisions throughout the history of the estate have split the vineyards of Leoville-Poyferre into five large areas. They include all the main types of gravely, well-drained soils present in Saint Julien and a balanced environment for the vines. This diversity contributes to the wines magnitude and complexity.

Chateau Leoville-Poyferre was most recently acquired in 1920 by the Cuvelier family. Didier Cuvelier has presided over the destiny of this gem since 1979. Chateau Moulin-Riche (from a specific terroir) and Pavillon de Leoville-Poyferre (from younger plots of vines) are also produced at the estate.

Chateau Leoville-Poyferre is elegant, finely balanced and complex with intense color, velvety texture and excellent aging potential.

Introducing the 2014 Leoville-Poyferre, a Bordeaux Blend hailing from the prestigious St Julien region of Bordeaux, France. This wine exudes elegance and sophistication, making it one of the standout Left Bank wines of its vintage. With its deep, ruby red color and a mesmerizing sheen, this wine is a true feast for the eyes.

On the nose, the 2014 Leoville-Poyferre captivates with outstanding clarity and freshness. It seems to leap out of the glass like an over-excited Yorkshire terrier, demanding attention. The aroma is a delightful combination of ripe blackberries, plums, and violets, intertwined with subtle notes of roasted apple wood and anise. The bouquet is further enhanced by a chiseled graphite spine, adding a sense of depth and complexity.

As you take your first sip, you are greeted by a medium-bodied palate that is incredibly smooth and velvety. The lithe tannins caress the tongue, creating a luxurious texture that is simply irresistible. The wine maintains a perfect balance with a precise line of acidity, enhancing its overall harmony. The finish is long and satisfying, slipping down the throat with ease.

Renowned critics have lavished praise upon the 2014 Leoville-Poyferre. Neal Martin of Vinous awarded it an impressive score of 95 points, describing it as a wine that will remain irresistible for the next 20 years. Wine Enthusiast awarded it 94 points, praising its concentrated fruit flavors and hinting at the richness that will emerge with age. Wine Spectator granted it 93 points, noting its purity and rock-solid structure. James Suckling was equally impressed, awarding it 94 points and describing it as a ripe, generous, and substantial wine.

With its solid core of ripe tannins and ample acidity, the 2014 Leoville-Poyferre is a wine with real concentration and potential. While it is already showing its charms, it is recommended to cellar it for four to five years to fully unlock its true potential. This wine is a true beauty and will continue to evolve and delight for the next 15-20 years.

Overall, the 2014 Leoville-Poyferre is a wine that showcases the exceptional craftsmanship of the producer, Leoville-Poyferre. It is a wine that embodies the essence of the St Julien region and the Bordeaux terroir. Pour yourself a glass, sit back, and allow this wine to transport you to the heart of French winemaking excellence.
