The 2014 Königsbacher Ölberg Riesling trocken, from a stony marl soil similar to the soil in the Idig grand cru, is very clear and elegant on the nose; it delivers some spicy flavors along with honeydew melon aromas. Very elegant, intense and juicy on the palate, this is an elegant, very well balanced and persistent Riesling with a long and salty, vivacious finish. Very well structured and stimulating, this is another Best Buy of the 2014 Christmann portfolio. - Stephan Reinhardt

Reductive notes of machine oil allied to intimations of quarry dust put me in mind a bit of certain Alsace Rieslings from similarly clay- and active lime-rich soils. Scents of grapefruit and lemon rind anticipate the brightly juicy and invigoratingly piquant impression conveyed on a firm palate equipped with stony underpinnings. The finish nicely illustrates the energetic “ping” that so many wine growers regardless of grape or nationality tend to attribute to limestone soils. Citric juiciness and a lick of salt serve for a refreshing and mouthwateringly engaging effect that banishes austerity. -- David Schildknecht
