Wine Enthusiast, April 2017

The wine is powered both by its tannins and by its great fruit. Dark and dense both in the structure and the black-plum flavors, it is very fine wine– juicy and ripe. This is a serious wine with a great future. Drink from...

Dark fruits, stony ground, crushed rocks, serious Left Bank feel, with Cabernet Sauvignon dominant, well structured, plenty of life ahead, not the most geneous of Chevaliers but brilliant quality, restrained, confident, a...

jebdunnuck.com, November 2017

A blend of 65 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 30 % Merlot and 5 % Petit Verdot, harvest quite late, the 2014 Domaine de Chevalier is more refined and understated than the 2015 yet still offers more opulence, texture, and mid-palate...

Decanter, April 2018

Seriously dark purple in colour, this is crowded aromatically in the best possible way, offering an array of dark fruits, rosemary and cinnamon spice. Opens up on the palate eventually but still clearly young, needs time...

Focused, with a graphite edge that runs from start to finish alongside the dark plum and blackberry purée flavors. Reveals a pretty echo of anise through the finish, which has latent depth. Solid. Best from 2018 through...

Domaine de Chevalier of the Pessac-Leognan appellation is classified as a Grand Cru Classe de Graves. The property belonged to the Ricard family from 1865 until it was purchased by its current owners, the Bernard family, in 1983. It is one of a very few Bordeaux estates to have kept its “domaine” title instead of using the the more popular “chateau” designation.

The estate covers a hundred hectares, of which 45 are under vine: 40 for the property’s red wines, and 5 for its whites. The vineyards are planted with 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot for the red wines, and 70% Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Semillon for the white wines. Soils are dark sand and fine white gravel.

Domaine de Chevalier has been run since acquisition by Olivier Bernard, who perpetuates that spirit of balance and the constant drive for perfection which have been the hallmark of their outstanding wines. The flagship red belongs to the elite of the great classified growths of Bordeaux, while the white is recognized as one of the world’s finest dry wines. The domaine also produces red and white second wines under the Esprit de Chevalier label, which are made from the estate’s young vines.

Olivier Bernard has this to say about his red wines: “Domaine de Chevalier rouge has good structure and a great deal of finesse, complexity, and aging potential – which does not exclude a smooth, fruity quality that makes it enjoyable in its youth. Always balanced, never aggressive, power is by no means the priority...”

Assistant General Manager, Rémi Edange adds: “Chevalier’s red wines are well-structured with round, very fine, tight-knit tannin... They are tremendously elegant and distinguished with a very long aftertaste and more delicacy than power...”

Introducing the 2014 Domaine de Chevalier, a Bordeaux Blend from the esteemed Pessac Leognan region of Bordeaux, France. This red wine exudes elegance and sophistication, showcasing the true artistry of winemaking. With a deep and intense color that is reminiscent of a dark plum, this wine is visually captivating and promises to deliver an exceptional tasting experience.

Upon first nosing, the wine reveals an enticing bouquet of pure blackberry, raspberry coulis, and iodine-tinged aromas that envelop the senses. The aroma is both powerful and refined, setting the stage for what is to come. As the wine is sipped, the palate is greeted with a medium-bodied texture and fine tannins that create a sense of harmony and balance. The acidity is superb, adding a refreshing quality to the overall structure of the wine. This is a wine that is precise and sophisticated, displaying a level of symmetry that is uncommon in the 2014 vintage.

The flavor profile of the 2014 Domaine de Chevalier is a true testament to the craftsmanship of winemaker Olivier Bernard. Ripe redcurrant and delicate herbal notes dance on the palate, accompanied by just a hint of spicy oak. The wine is juicy and ripe, with a depth and complexity that is both alluring and captivating. It is the perfect example of a wine that is both powerful and elegant, showcasing the best qualities of the Bordeaux Blend.

Renowned wine critics have praised this wine for its exceptional quality and potential for aging. Wine Enthusiast awarded it a score of 95, describing it as "juicy and ripe" with a "great future." Wine Spectator awarded it a score of 92, highlighting its focused nature and latent depth. James Suckling also gave it a score of 94, noting its balance and subtle nuances on the long finish.

The 2014 Domaine de Chevalier is a wine that demands attention and respect. It is a wine that is meant to be savored and appreciated, and it will undoubtedly continue to evolve and improve with age. This is a wine that exemplifies the best of Bordeaux and the art of winemaking.
