(WA89-92 points) The 2014 Volnay Clos d'Audignac 1er Cru, the domaine's 0.80-hectare monopole planted in 1966, has a very different bouquet compared with the 2014 En Caillerets; it is much more floral and perfumed, with hints of wilted violets infusing the pretty black cherry and raspberry coulis aromas. The palate is quite pointed on the entry with noticeable tannin, perhaps a little abrasive with quite citric acidity. This needs to gain a little more harmony, but what I like is the energy in this Volnay. It feels "uncontained" at the moment, almost feral, but that is absorbing. It could go either way once in bottle! - Neal Martin

Liqueur-like aromas of cherry, boysenberry, meaty plum, spices and smoky oak. A bit more red and less primary than the darker Clos de la Bousse d'Or. Suaver in texture too; tight on entry, then opens nicely toward the back. Plenty of energy here, owing to the cooler site. Finishes with a saline element and substantial spicy tannins.

This is aromatically much earthier and notably less spicy though there is a lovely layering to the restrained nose of various dark berries, plum and tea scents. There is both fine volume and intensity to the beautifully detailed and stony medium weight and tautly muscular flavors that deliver excellent depth and length. This powerful effort should amply reward up to a decade of cellar time.
