A discreet application of wood doesn't detract from the intensely floral and notably elegant red berry fruit and earth-inflected aromas. There is really lovely richness and volume to the caressing medium-bodied flavors that coat the palate with dry extract on the balanced, complex and wonderfully persistent finale. This too is absolutely lovely.

Musky aromas of black cherry, violet, licorice and bitter chocolate. Powerful, densely packed and penetrating, showing less early sweetness than the Lavaux-Saint-Jacques but coming across as remarkably thick and full for a 2014. A bit oaky in the early going but one can already appreciate this wine's grand cru depth. Finishes with big, dusty, even tannins and terrific chewy persistence. This wine boasts lovely balance but will nonetheless require extended aging.

(WA90-92 points) Utilizing around 40% whole bunch fruit, the 2014 Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru has a comparatively rich bouquet with layers of macerated red cherry fruit mixed with blueberry, the new oak coming through in pronounced fashion. The palate is sweet on the entry with grainy tannin, red cherries and wild strawberry, as well as a touch of orange rind with a spice note towards the structured finish that is Mazoyères-like in style. Give this a decade in bottle. - Neal Martin
