Sexy blueberry, spice and black pepper. Mushroom. Full body and ultra-fine tannins. Extremely long and just starting to come around now. Needs a little more time in bottle. Splendid finish. Try in 2019 but already amazing.

Fattoria Le Pupille, located in the Maremma region of Tuscany, is a leading winery owned by Elisabetta Geppetti, the Ambassador of Maremma and called the Lady of Morellino. As a young student, Elisabetta had foreseen great productive potential in the countryside she loved, and armed with her enthusiasm and love of wine which she inherited from her grandfather, she embarked on a journey to transform her family’s small wine estate into what it is today: 175+ acres of vineyards, more than 500,000 bottles made every year and presence in the markets of four continents.

The core of the property is around the village of Pereta surrounded by 65 acres of vineyard that include 12 acres which give life to the winery’s legendary wine: Saffredi. With the support of Italian wine legend Giacomo Tachis, she replanted Cabernet Sauvignon on a few vines of Sangiovese, which in 1985 started bearing fruit, giving birth to a project that has made the winery the true pioneer of Maremma.

The operating nucleus of the property, from early 2000, is in proximity of Istia d’Ombrone near Grosseto. The winery is an antique farmhouse surrounded by a 30-acre vineyard, including a small patch dedicated to Sangiovese grapes coming from ancient vine rows.

The Le Pupille vineyards are planted to 70% Sangiovese, 10% Malvasia Nera and Alicante, 4% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Merlot, 2% Syrah and 2% Cabernet Franc. There are 23 acres of vineyards for the white grape varieties: Traminer, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.

The 2014 Fattoria Le Pupille Saffredi IGT is a remarkable wine that embodies the essence of Tuscany, Italy. With its deep red color, this proprietary blend is a true representation of the region's rich winemaking tradition. Crafted by the renowned producer, Fattoria Le Pupille, this wine is a testament to their commitment to quality and excellence.

On the nose, the 2014 Saffredi offers an enticing bouquet of sexy blueberry, spice, and black pepper. These aromas are complemented by hints of mushroom, adding a touch of earthiness to the wine. The palate is greeted with a full-bodied sensation and ultra-fine tannins, showcasing the wine's impeccable structure. As the wine unfolds, it reveals an extremely long finish, leaving a lasting impression on the senses.

James Suckling, a well-known wine critic, awarded this vintage an impressive score of 96 points. He describes the wine as just starting to come around now, indicating that it has great aging potential. Suckling suggests trying it in 2019, but also notes that it is already amazing. This wine truly embodies the complexity and depth that Tuscany is renowned for.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate also praises the 2014 Saffredi, awarding it a score of 92 points. The reviewer notes that while the wine is currently on the market, it could benefit from additional aging to fully develop its potential. The bouquet is slow to open, but once it does, it reveals dark fruit intensity, with blackberry and dried cherry leading the way. There are also hints of spice, cured leather, and dark chocolate, adding layers of complexity to the wine.

Wine Spectator, another esteemed publication, awarded the 2014 Saffredi a score of 93 points. They highlight the wine's perfumed character, with aromas of cedar, sage, black currant, and oak spice. The wine's complex flavors are driven by a vibrant acidity, and the finish is marked by substantial grip.
