Exotic spice, pipe tobacco, dark-skinned berry, forest floor and a whiff of French oak all come together on this structured red. The elegant, full-bodied palate evokes Marasca cherry, black raspberry, licorice and white pepper while vibrant acidity and firm, fine-grained tannins provide balance. It's still young, with great energy and will benefit from more time in the bottle. Drink 2020–2029.

Solely owned by Fontodi, Vigna del Sorbo is a 40-year-old parcel within their Panzano property. Until 2012 it included a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon, but is now made entirely from Sangiovese. It is aged in equal percentages of new and used barriques. While the 2014 needs time to come around, it won't be the longest-lived vintage, but it's an excellent wine with good cellaring potential. It's smoky and quietly alluring, with hints of balsam, truffle and baking spice. Layered without being lush, it is also sternly tannic. Drinking Window 2021 - 2036

I tasted this wine as a preview about eight months ago, and it has fleshed out considerably since then. The 2014 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo impresses for the depth and the intensity of the fruit. The bouquet is shapely and round with dark cherry nuances, blackberry, grilled herb and sweet spice. You also get a lingering moment of strong firmness and power on the close. An elegant version, with a keen edge of tannins underlining the pure cherry, blackberry, leather and earth flavors. Turns more polished with air, finishing up with a hint of bitter almond. Best from 2019 through 2030. 350 cases imported. –BS
