Bottled in April 2016, the 2014 Riesling Uhlen R 'VDP Grosse Lage' opens with a very clear, deep and ripe, stony-flavored Riesling bouquet. On the palate, this is a very finessed and elegant but also rich and intense Riesling full of tension and promises. This is great Riesling in the middle of nowhere at the moment. Great purity and salinity. Tasted in October 2016.

Kumquat and Meyer lemon mingled with quarry dust, tarragon, fennel, mint and smoky black tea make for a pungent nose and piquantly inflected palate with a prominently stony undertone. Thanks to an abundance of sheer fresh citrus juiciness, a polished feel and a surprising sense of lift, the effect of stoniness, piquancy and smokiness is neither severe nor austere. The finish is highly nuanced and refreshingly sustained, a tribute to the complex amalgam of green herbal, mineral and citrus flavors that mark these towering red slate terraces as one of the world’s great Riesling sites. Note that a large letter “R” stands in for “Roth Lay” on this wine’s label, but beneath that is written in tiny letters “Schieferformation Roth-Lay.” - David Schildknecht
