After decades and decades of buying fruit from the same vigneron in Charmes-Chambertin, the Drouhin family had to find a new source for this cru in the 2014 vintage. The wine was still in barrel at the time of my visit, but showing very fine potential in its aromatic constellation of red and black cherries, a touch of cassis, grilled meats, espresso, mustard seed, dark soil tones and cedary wood. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and properly reserved out of the blocks, with a good core, suave tannins and a long, tangy and quite soil-driven finish. This is a very auspicious start for the maison’s new source in Charmes!
