The 2014 Riesling Trocken Vulkangestein is sourced from younger (30- to 40-year-old) plots of the grands crus Stromberg and Felsenberg; the grapes were both picked a week earlier than the Grosses Gewächs Rieslings. The wine offers a very pure and stony, stunningly fine and flinty/smoky bouquet of bright fruits. Medium-bodied and extremely mineral on the palate, with a complex and well concentrated taste, this is a racy, piquant, very mineral and complex Riesling with stunning length and tension. The Vulkangestein Riesling Trocken bottling hails all from younger vines in the two grand cru vineyards of Felsenberg and Stromberg, which are the volcanic soil grand crus in the winery’s lineup. This is really outstanding in 2014, jumping from the glass in a blaze of grapefruit, lemon, stony minerality, wild yeasts, a touch of smokiness and a vibrant topnote of citrus zest. On the palate the wine is pure, fullish and racy, with a rock solid core, superb focus and grip, nascent complexity and a very long, poised and transparent finish. This could use a year or two (at least) in the cellar to really blossom and show some of its secondary layers, but it is outstanding wine and one of the best values to be found in the vintage. 2016-2035.

Pronounced herbaceous aromas leave enough room for a fragrance of flinty minerality. This Riesling is grown on volcanic rock and its flavour grabs the attention of the taste buds with a compact substance and stone-dusty expression.
