The Vulkangestein Riesling Trocken bottling hails all from younger vines in the two grand cru vineyards of Felsenberg and Stromberg, which are the volcanic soil grand crus in the winery’s lineup. This is really outstanding in 2014, jumping from the glass in a blaze of grapefruit, lemon, stony minerality, wild yeasts, a touch of smokiness and a vibrant topnote of citrus zest. On the palate the wine is pure, fullish and racy, with a rock solid core, superb focus and grip, nascent complexity and a very long, poised and transparent finish. This could use a year or two (at least) in the cellar to really blossom and show some of its secondary layers, but it is outstanding wine and one of the best values to be found in the vintage. 2016-2035.
