Another sensational Merlot is the 2014 Merlot Stoneridge Vineyard, which also comes from the Wahluke Slope AVA in the middle of the state. This is a warm (hot) and dry terroir that consists of sandy loam and gravelly soils. Plums, Asian spices, graphite and dried flower-like characteristics all emerge from this beauty that is layered, medium to full-bodied, concentrated and textured. - Jeb Dunnuck

(from river rock soil featuring broken boulders; aged in 45% new oak, almost entirely Boutes Grand Reserve barrels): Bright, dark red-ruby. Sexy rose petal lift to the aromas of currant, black cherry, dark chocolate and vanillin oak. Quite rich but surprisingly tight and imploded; less sweet than the Vineyard Collection Cabernet Sauvignon from the same vineyard and more savory and soil-driven. Intriguing, fine-grained Merlot with lovely length and subtle sweetness. The tannins spread out to saturate the palate. - Stephen Tanzer

Brick red in the glass with medium concentration, this opens with aromas of dried cherries, tanned leather and a touch of dusty earth adding complexity. Medium to full bodied, the Stoneridge shows fresh and bright fruit on the palate with exquisite structure framing all of the elements before leading to a long, chewy finish. This could benefit from some time in a decanter if drinking now and should be in fine form from 2020-2030.
