(90-92 points) The 2015 Cuvee Prephylloxerique from Château Clos Saint Emilion Philippe is pure Merlot from vines that obviously predate phylloxera, planted on sand. The nose is clean and pure, quite opulent like the regular cuvee, but it demonstrated more refinement and poise. There are gorgeous dark cherries, cassis and bilberry scents. The palate is medium-bodied with impressive volume, lovely balance and purity, with layers of blackberry, pain grille and a pleasant saline finish that shows impressive focus and delineation. This is a delicious Saint Emilion that should bestow 12-15 years of pleasure. - Neal Martin

An old vine cuvee produced from 115+ year old vines with pre-phylloxera rootstock (a true rarity in Bordeaux today). This exemplifies the 2015 vintage right out of the gate showing ripe, flashy fruit aromas that runs the spectrum from red to black underscored by notes of star anise, tobacco, and baking spices. With a well-textured palate, the flavors are a harmonious blend of savory elements coupled with perfectly ripe, dark fruit, which are supported by a beam of acidity and fine-grained, grippy tannins, culminating in a finish of surprising length. Showing quite well in these early stages, but it should benefit from another 3-5 years in the cellar and drink well the following decade after.
