Owning a winery was been a longtime aspiration of Drew Bledsoe, a former NFL quarterback, since it would allow him to combine his passion for fine wine and love of the Walla Walla Valley. Returning to his hometown in 2007, he planted his estate vineyard, McQueen, in SeVein Vineyards of Distinction. The following year, he launched Doubleback, an estate-focused winery, to produce ultra-premium Cabernet Sauvignon from the Walla Walla Valley. It has since received numerous accolades including a spot on the Wine Spectator’s Top 100 list.

The estate’s McQueen Vineyard spans 50 acres, planted to 14.4 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec. Acquired in 2011, the Bob Healy Vineyard is planted to 9.7 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec.

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Malbec made from estate-grown and sourced fruit, Doubleback Cabernet Sauvignon is aged in 75% new French oak and 25% second fill French oak barrels for 22 months.

When retired quarterback Drew Bledsoe partnered with childhood friend, Leonetti’s Chris Figgins, to start a winery in Walla Walla, it seemed to fit the all too familiar pattern of celebrity vanity project. Ten years on however, the Wine Advocate writes that “if you think this is a mere vanity label...I’m betting that you haven’t tasted the wine.” This is one of the most exciting new projects in the Northwest, with Jeb Dunnuck heaping praise on Doubleback for making “one of the top Cabernet Sauvignon releases in just about every vintage.” The 2015 Doubleback Cabernet Sauvignon is a “beautiful, impeccably made” wine nabbing 94+pts from Jeb Dunnuck who described it as “rich, full-bodied, and elegant.” Bledsoe’s McQueen vineyard is one of Walla Walla’s most extraordinary new sites. The 1,450ft elevation and higher winds mean small clusters, with greater concentration and more tannin, coaxed out by new winemaker Josh McDaniel (also of Leonetti). This is definitely on the more age-worthy end of the spectrum for Washington Cabernet but should start to show well with only a few more years in the bottle.
