Its structure promises aging while its concentration and black fruits are already impressive. This is a rich wine but one that has the classic elegance of Saint-Julien.

Dark berries, iron and hints of rust with some iodine. Full-bodied, round and juicy with a solid backbone of tannins and focus. This second wine of Ducru-Beaucaillou. Polished. Drink in 2021.

It has a floral note on the nose: small black cherries, blueberry and wilted violets, the last becoming more intense as the initially tight-fisted wine opens in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin. There is very well-judged acidity and its texture is harmonious and silky smooth. The quality is loaded more in the mouth than on the nose at the moment, but it is a seriously classy "deuxième vin" that just needs a little more persistence on the finish. - Neal Martin

This unfurls with a flourish on the nose, bringing a basket of brambly fruits to the fore. It needs time in the glass to allow the intense dark fruit to unfurl, but there is elegance here, and a rich kick of spice. It needs time in the glass to allow the intense dark fruit to unfurl, but there is elegance here, and a rich kick of spice. It reveals a slight dip on the mid-palate that characterises 2015 St-Juliens, but no one is going to complain about the richness of the fruit and the mouthwatering finish. Bottled in June, it should be ready to go in five to six years.
