(vinified with two-thirds whole clusters and aged entirely in jarres): Healthy medium red. Very ripe, rather wild aromas of black raspberry, smoke, spices and leather; more animal than the 2016 version. Big, rich, plush wine with a thickness of texture that suggests high alcohol (actually 13.4%). Fat and sweet but could use a bit more definition; this wine does not have the purity or floral lift of its 2016 sibling. Finishes with big, broad tannins and a slight youthful aggressiveness. Fred Magnien noted that wines aged in jarres actually lose a bit more alcohol through evaporation than wines done in oak barrels.- ST
