jamessuckling.com, June 2019

A pretty nose that shows lots of cabernet character with eucalyptus, fresh herbs, grass and then plenty of blackcurrants, iodine and hot stones. I love the richness to the essence-like dark fruit here with round tannins...

Poggio al Tesoro is a dream come true for Marilisa Allegrini, who fell for the land and saw its exceptional value and quality. After just a few years and a great deal of hard work, Poggio al Tesoro is now a thriving 70 hectare (173 acre) estate in prime Bolgheri wine-making territory.

The Estate currently has four vineyards: two situated along the Via Bolgherese, the largest one in a village called Le Sondraie near the sea, and the fourth in the town of Bibbona.

Poggio al Tesoro owes a great deal to Marilisa’s brother Walter Allegrini, who chose the parcels of land that would constitute the current estate, aiming for diversification in terroirs and grape varieties. The estate produces wines with a distinctive personality, expressing power and complexity as well as elegance and depth.

The 2015 Poggio al Tesoro Dedicato A Walter is a remarkable red wine from the Tuscany region of Italy. This wine showcases the pure expression of Cabernet Franc, a varietal known for its complexity and elegance. With its deep red color and enticing aromas, this wine is sure to captivate the senses.

On the nose, the Dedicato A Walter offers a range of enticing scents. The aroma of dark fruits fills the air, accompanied by hints of spice and Mediterranean herbs. The fragrance is further enhanced by notes of eucalyptus, fresh herbs, and grass, adding a layer of freshness and complexity to the wine.

Upon tasting, the wine reveals its true character. It is supremely elegant, with a velvety texture and well-integrated tannins. The palate is greeted with flavors of blackcurrants, licorice, and tobacco, all beautifully balanced by the toasty oak undertones. The wine's richness and essence-like dark fruit make for a truly memorable experience.

The 2015 vintage of Dedicato A Walter has benefited from aging in 100% new oak for 24 months, followed by ten months in the bottle. The winemaking team at Poggio al Tesoro has aimed to achieve a perfect balance between the oak influence and the natural expression of the fruit. However, this wine will continue to evolve and express itself fully with more time in the cellar.

Renowned wine critic Robert Parker's Wine Advocate awarded this wine an outstanding score of 97 points, praising its mineral essence and supreme elegance. James Suckling also lauded the wine, giving it a score of 94 points and highlighting its cabernet franc purity. Wine Spectator rated it 93 points, noting the sweet ripe black cherry and blackberry fruit, as well as the light tannins that keep the wine honest on the finish.

The 2015 Poggio al Tesoro Dedicato A Walter is a wine that demands attention and respect. With its complexity, elegance, and outstanding reviews, it is truly a standout example of Cabernet Franc from Tuscany. This wine is best enjoyed after a few more years of aging, but for those who can't wait, it can be savored now and will continue to evolve and impress in the years to come.
