(92-95) Here the oak/menthol influence on the spicy aromas of plum, cassis and soft earth is more moderate though it's still far from subtle. There is both excellent volume and precision to the delicious, sophisticated and energetic medium-bodied flavors that possess a taut muscularity before concluding in a gorgeously complex and persistent finish. This is pretty much textbook Les Cailles though one that is also clearly in need of extended cellaring.

The nose offers a tight, sappy core of medicinal red cherry, blackberry, blueberry, licorice and rocky minerality. Densely packed yet light on its feet, with its black and purple berry flavors complicated and enlivened by saline minerality. Finishes energetic and very long, with lingering salinity, the firm tannins arriving late. Superb potential from this top site.

A straight-ahead, fruity style, featuring cherry, raspberry, spice, underbrush and iron aromas and flavors. Just when you think this is open and approach-able, the assertive tannins kick in. Best from 2023 through 2040. ... A straight-ahead, fruity style, featuring cherry, raspberry, spice, underbrush and iron aromas and flavors. (88-90) The 2016 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Cailles has quite a plush and outgoing bouquet with hints of licorice and damson developing in the glass—just a touch of headiness here. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe black cherry and boysenberry jam notes, a little smudged on the finish where I would be seeking more tension. But I suspect this will improve once in bottle. -Neal Martin
