(92-94) The smaller production 2016 Saint Joseph Sensonne is a selection of old vines and comes from terroirs around Tournon and Saint-Jean-de-Muzols. Aging in new barrels, it offers a more modern style in its crème de cassis, sweet oak, ground herbs, and meaty aromas and flavors. Big, rich, unctuous and structured, with plenty of tannins, as well as a stacked mid-palate, it's going to need 2-3 years of bottle age and keep for 15 years.

Smoke-accented black and blue fruits, cola, violet and licorice on the highly perfumed, expansive nose. Appealingly sweet, mineral-accented cassis and boysenberry flavors show superb depth and pick up a sexy floral quality with aeration. Displays impressive detail and mineral lift on the youthfully tannic, extremely persistent finish, which features resonating blue fruit and licorice notes. -- Josh Raynolds
