Decanter, May 2019

Intense and focused. 75% Sauvignon Blanc and 25% Semillon. Oak imparts extra complexity to this wonderfully concentrated wine. Restrained and refined yet powerful. A great vintage and benchmark Pessac-Léognan white.

This flirts with a tropical hint, as peach and nectarine details peek in on the core of meringue, lemon peel, shortbread, melon and yellow apple fruit flavors. Heather and macadamia nut notes gild the finish, which is...

Domaine de Chevalier of the Pessac-Leognan appellation is classified as a Grand Cru Classe de Graves. The property belonged to the Ricard family from 1865 until it was purchased by its current owners, the Bernard family, in 1983. It is one of a very few Bordeaux estates to have kept its “domaine” title instead of using the the more popular “chateau” designation.

The estate covers a hundred hectares, of which 45 are under vine: 40 for the property’s red wines, and 5 for its whites. The vineyards are planted with 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot for the red wines, and 70% Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Semillon for the white wines. Soils are dark sand and fine white gravel.

Domaine de Chevalier has been run since acquisition by Olivier Bernard, who perpetuates that spirit of balance and the constant drive for perfection which have been the hallmark of their outstanding wines. The flagship red belongs to the elite of the great classified growths of Bordeaux, while the white is recognized as one of the world’s finest dry wines. The domaine also produces red and white second wines under the Esprit de Chevalier label, which are made from the estate’s young vines.

The 2016 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc, a Bordeaux Blanc from the distinguished region of Pessac Leognan, France, is an exquisite white wine of unparalleled elegance and flamboyance. Crafted by the renowned producer, Domaine de Chevalier, this white wine is a harmonious blend of 75% Sauvignon Blanc and 25% Semillon.

The appearance of this wine is as captivating as its taste, presenting a beautiful white color that is a visual treat for the wine connoisseur. As you uncork the bottle, a symphony of aromatic sweetness embraces you, filling your senses with juicy lemons, exotic pomelo, spice, vanilla, and flowers.

The wine exhibits a remarkable roundness on the palate, offering a lush, sweet, and vibrant flavor profile. It is forward in style, making it an excellent choice for immediate consumption as well as a few years of aging.

The nose of this wine reveals enticing notes of spiced pears, waxy lemons, honeysuckle, and yuzu, characterized by wafts of lime juice and green guava. The medium-bodied wine dances elegantly on the palate, with great intensity and a racy line cutting through the citrus and tropical layers, finishing long.

The wine's complexity is further enhanced by the well-defined bouquet of white peach, apricot, and light candle wax aromas, with nicely integrated oak. The palate leads with quince and orange peel, revealing a pleasant bitter undertow and fanning out confidently towards a saline finish.

This wine truly encapsulates the expertise and tradition of Domaine de Chevalier, boasting a massive bouquet of crushed citrus, salty minerality, white flowers, and grapefruit. It's racy, full-bodied and concentrated, offering a brilliant texture and a promise of longevity. This vintage is a testament to the timeless charm of French wines and the mastery of Domaine de Chevalier in creating a truly enchanting Bordeaux Blanc.
