(97 - 99) The 2016 Musigny Grand Cru consists of a single 180-liter new barrel with 100% whole bunch fruit, so keep that in mind when requesting your allocation of a dozen magnums, preferably signed by Christophe himself. He lost around half his vines due to frost, though he confessed that this was not as much as he expected since they are located toward the upper reaches of the vineyard. It has a brilliantly defined, crystalline bouquet laden with blackberry, briary, minerals and wilted rose petal. Haunting. It is as if to say, what frost? The palate is medium-bodied with filigreed tannin, and yet there is impressive density. This is so pure and expressive, with hints of kirsch and orange peel toward the vivid finish that has almost clinical precision. The wake of the aftertaste is that of an ocean liner charging across the Atlantic. The quality of this Musigny is inversely proportional to its quantity.-NM

(94-98 points) Christophe asked tonnelier François Freres to make him a special 180 litre barrel to house this year’s reduced crop of Musigny. Entirely whole bunch vinification. It has a magical imperial purple colour, huge concentration of course, obviously the more sombre notes of whole bunches but also a thrilling liquid dark fruit finish.

This is arguably the most overtly floral-scented wine in the range with its lovely array of rose petal, violet and lavender aromas that are liberally cut with spice, sandalwood and exotic tea. There is both outstanding concentration and power to the big-bodied and, like the Amoureuses, almost pungently mineral-driven flavors that conclude in a driving finish where the intensity really builds from the mid-palate all the way to the explosive backend. This is a huge wine but one of impeccable class and grace.

In 2016, Roumier produced only 180 litres of Musigny, yet it's one of the wines of the vintage. A stunning bouquet of red and black cherry, violet, rose petal and subtle forest floor wafts from the glass, introducing a full-bodied, velvety and complete wine with amazing mid-palate depth and amplitude. It has an elegant sense of reserve, with superb sap and energy, and a long, complex, penetrating finish. This marries the volume and power of Bonnes-Mares with the elegance and transparency of Amoureuses, and the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. (93-96) (vinified entirely with whole clusters in a new 180-liter barrel made specially for the tiny quantity of fruit--18 hectoliters per hectare--produced in 2016): Good deep red. An aroma of raspberry is given lift and punch by chalky mineral pungency and a note of white pepper. Boasts outstanding thickness and finesse of texture, conveying a bulletproof quality to its fruit. Displays lovely spicy lift yet does not come across as particularly oaky--and not a bit dominated by its considerable stem component. This wine may not have quite the refinement or palate-saturating length of its 2015 sibling but it offers stunning potential.-ST
