The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaut Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has certainly stepped up in intensity since I last tasted it. Redcurrant, cranberry, juniper berries and just a touch of mint, fine delineation with fine focus. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins, perfectly judged acidity, a touch of allspice and white pepper, fanning out gloriously on the expansive finish. Time to raise my previous score. (90-93) Moderate wood frames cool, pure and restrained aromas of various dark berries, humus and a gamy whiff. The tautly muscular and impressively intense medium weight plus flavors also exude plenty of minerality on the seductive yet quite serious finish that leaves little doubt that this will need at least 10 years to arrive at its apogee.

92+ Entirely destemmed, the 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaut Saint-Jacques reveals beautiful aromas of bright cherries and raspberries that mingle with scents of spice, grilled game bird, loamy soil and rose petal. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, layered and muscular, with good concentration and fine-grained structuring tannins that assert themselves on the finish.
