This 2016 Barossa Valley Shiraz is midnight black in colour, with aromas in which lushly ripe blackberry and plum meet earth, sweet dust, tar and a hint of black treacle. This is a splendidly mouthfilling wine on the palate: earthy, rich, broad... even beefy behind that mountain of blackberry and plum. There are comfortingly soft tannins, and the acidity is very finely judged, subtle and unassertive, lifting but without dominating or throwing the wine out of balance. Wholly satisfying, as well as pure and true. DRINK 2018-2030

Deeply colored; this is at once full-bodied and elegant, not a common marriage with young red wines with decades in front of them. The flavors are all black: blackberry, blackcurrant, black cherry, earth and licorice. The old vines have also provided ripe tannins, the whole theme resonated with oak a la Grange.

A ripe nose with the classic blackberry compote nose, as well as some more intriguing nuances such as blueberry skin, dried eucalyptus and dark chocolate. Full body, some really structured tannins, driven acidity and a chewy finish. Lots of fruit, but it remains tight and linear throughout. Drink in 2022. Screw cap.

Plump and spicy, featuring clove and nutmeg overtones to the blackberry and huckleberry flavors, with accents of black tea and gingerbread backed by dense, velvety tannins. Drink now through 2033. — MW

Dark berry fruit marks the nose of Duval's 2016 Entity Shiraz. Blackberries, blueberries and plums pick up hints of campfire, charcoal and grilled meat, making it a complete, savory wine, not a simple fruit bomb. It's medium to full-bodied, controlled and contained, without any rough edges and a crisp finish. - Joe Czerwinski

In the glass, this Shiraz is an opaque and inky hue of purple. Give it a few swirls and its nose opens pleasantly with notes of cherry and blackberry concentrate along with aromas of smoked meat, pot pourri, dry baking spice and black plum. Transitioning to the palate, the wine is light on it’s feet for a Shiraz and opens very fruit forward before revealing the nuances detected on the nose. Harmonious and balanced – and with gentle tannins – the finish is medium-long and carried by notes of fresh-crushed dark fruit. This new release from John Duval is delightful in its youth but it will certainly continue to develop some complexity over the next decade or so. Fire up the grill, put on the steak and enjoy it with this Shiraz!
