In 1990, after fifteen years of making world-class Bordeaux-varietal wines under the famous Duckhorn label, owners Dan and Margaret Duckhorn embraced their growing love of Pinot Noir. The vision for Goldeneye was simple - to start a winery that could make a terroir-inspired expression of California Pinot Noir of equal stature to the acclaimed Merlots they had pioneered at Duckhorn Vineyards in Napa Valley.

They knew that the finest Pinot Noir thrives in very different conditions than Merlot. They found what they were looking for in the Anderson Valley, an appellation that had all the ingredients for producing world-class Pinot. In 1996, Goldeneye Winery was founded and the first estate vineyard was selected. A year later, Goldeneye harvested its first grapes, a modest 7 tons of estate fruit yielding 375 cases of wine, which were released in March of 2000.

Today, Goldeneye features the appellation’s preeminent Pinot Noir estate program, which spans the valley and includes four estate vineyards and more than 200 acres under vine. Their style has become the benchmark for the region, and has catapulted Goldeneye to the ranks of the world’s finest Pinot Noir.

The 2016 Goldeneye (Duckhorn) Pinot Noir is a remarkable wine that showcases the elegance and complexity of California's Anderson Valley. With its garnet hue and enticing aromas, this Pinot Noir is a true delight for the senses.

Upon pouring a glass, one is greeted by a captivating mix of black cherry, dark soil, and hints of vanilla. There are also subtle notes of tea leaves and baking spices, adding another layer of complexity to the wine. The palate echoes the aromas, delivering a captivating array of fruit, earth, and spice. The ample fruit up front is well balanced with decent acidity, creating a harmonious and pleasurable drinking experience.

This wine is a testament to the craftsmanship of Goldeneye (Duckhorn), as it is well-made, charming, and easy-drinking. It is also incredibly food-friendly, making it a versatile choice for any dining occasion. The integrated, fine-grained tannins provide structure and elegance, while the well-balanced acidity ensures a long and satisfying finish.

The wine has received high praise from notable critics. Kevin Johnson of JJ Buckley awarded it a score of 91, describing it as a "captivating array of fruit, earth, and spice." Wine Spectator gave it a score of 92, noting its "burnished dried cherry, berry, and cedary flavors." Wine Enthusiast also awarded it a score of 92, praising its "concentrated flavors of black fruit and ripe red berry." Jeb Dunnuck, from jebdunnuck.com, gave it a score of 90, highlighting its "terrific sense of elegance and purity."

Overall, the 2016 Goldeneye (Duckhorn) Pinot Noir is a stellar wine that showcases the best of California's Anderson Valley. Its complexity, balance, and versatility make it a true standout in the world of Pinot Noir. Whether enjoyed now or aged for a few more years, this wine is sure to provide an exceptional drinking experience.
