A terrific range of spice and fragrance that really defines great Côte-Rôtie. The fruit is in the fresh red-plum and dark-berry zone and there’s dark chocolate here, too. The palate has a very supple, smooth delivery of...

The 2016 Côte Rôtie Brune Et Blonde is more elegant and seamless, which is the style of the vintage. Pretty notes of cassis, flowers, wet granite, and hints of peppery herbs all flow to a medium to full-bodied Côte Rôtie...

The Guigal Estate was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal in Ampuis, a small ancient village and cradle of the Cote-Rotie appellation. It shelters a unique vineyard where the vines and the wines have been famous for 2,400 years. Arriving in the region in 1924 at the age of 14, Etienne began his career at Vidal-Fleury, participating in its development and working his way up to the position of cellar-master before leaving to establish his own company. He has vinified 67 harvests in Cote-Rotie.

In 1961, although still very young, Marcel Guigal took over management of the establishment from his father who was stricken suddenly with total blindness. In 1973, his wife Bernadette joined him and they worked together to develop the family business. In 1975, their son Philippe was born and is today the estate’s winemaker. With his wife Eve, he represents the third generation to continue the family business, in the service of the great wines of the Rhone Valley.

Their hard work and perseverance enabled them to purchase the Vidal-Fleury Establishment in the mid ‘80s and in 1995, they acquired the famous Chateau d’Ampuis, an ancient fort built in the 12th century, later repurposed into a Renaissance chateau during the 16th century. In a state of neglect and terrible disrepair, Guigal has taken on a colossal renovation, spanning nearly 11 years with over 100 people working on the project.

The Chateau d’Ampuis has become the headquarters of the Guigal Estate while the offices and the cellars remain in the ancient small village of Ampuis. While their vineyards span the length and breadth of what the Rhone Valley offers, the heart of the winery’s production is still Cote-Rotie, whose ultimate expression can be found in Guigal’s most famous releases: La Landonne, La Turque, and La Mouline.

The 2016 Guigal Cote Rotie Brune et Blonde is a red wine that embodies elegance and finesse, showcasing the style of the vintage. Hailing from the renowned Cote Rotie appellation in the Rhone region of France, this wine is crafted by the esteemed producer Guigal.

In the glass, this wine exhibits a deep, ruby red color that is both enticing and alluring. On the nose, it offers a captivating bouquet of cassis, delicate flowers, and wet granite, interwoven with hints of peppery herbs. These aromas create a symphony of scents that entice the senses and invite exploration.

On the palate, the 2016 Guigal Cote Rotie Brune et Blonde continues to impress. It is medium to full-bodied, with fine tannins that provide structure and balance. The flavors of fresh red plums and dark berries take center stage, accompanied by notes of dark chocolate that add depth and complexity. The supple and smooth delivery of the wine is met with a powerful, focused finish that lingers on the palate.

Critics have praised this wine for its exceptional qualities. Jeb Dunnuck awarded it a score of 91, describing it as elegant, seamless, and beautifully balanced. James Suckling bestowed a score of 94, commending its range of spice and fragrance, as well as its sturdy yet fine tannins. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate also gave it a score of 91, noting its wiry and lithe character, along with its charming and silky texture.

With an alcohol percentage of 13.5%, this red wine is perfectly suited for enjoying now or cellaring for the next 10-15 years. The 2016 Guigal Cote Rotie Brune et Blonde is a classic representation of the appellation and vintage, making it a must-have for wine enthusiasts seeking a refined and exceptional experience.
