(WA93-95 points) At least for this writer, the 2016 La Lagune is a return to form after their 2015 did not light my fire last en primeur. Lucid purple/black in color, it has a very intense bouquet with blackberries and sloes, whilst maintaining delineation and focus, almost pastille-like in style. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannin, perhaps just a little brittle on the entry, though it is commensurate with others 2016s that I tasted in barrel. I appreciate the focus and the "correctness" of this La Lagune, notwithstanding the freshness and tension that defines the persistent finish. This is a long-term wine, so do not be afraid to give this four or five years in the cellar. This is an excellent La Lagune, one of the best in recent years. - Neal Martin

(JL93-95 points) Cherry blossom, thyme, menthol and black raspberry notes create the bouquet. Finesse in style with soft lush tannins, round, dark cherry fruits and a spicy, silky, red berry finish with just the perfect amount of dark chocolate in the end note to add some fatness and complexity. Produced from a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, the wine reached 14% alcohol with a pH of 3.6 and is aging in 50% new French oak barrels for 14 months before bottling. The harvest ran from September 6 to October 17. This is the first vintage from La Lagune that was certified organic.

Full body, yet the texture is amazing giving it a plush, silky texture that makes it formed and beautiful. Thick and melting in the mouth. Lots of forest floor, tar and black currant character. Very persistent finish. Energy. From organically grown grapes.

La Lagune wines possess elegance and balance, two features which typify the great Bordeaux wines. Freshness, harmony, and a touch of femininity grant La Lagune true personality which is recognized by Bordeaux’s greatest oenologists like Emile Peynaud and Denis Dubourdieu.

The secret of the La Lagune style lies in an exceptional terroir, perfectly mature grapes, careful vinification, and respectful ageing.

Winery

Lagune, La

Chateau La Lagune is a wine estate in Haut Medoc ranked as a 3rd Growth Grand Cru Classe Bordeaux. Its history can be traced back to the 16th century under King Henri IV when Dutch engineers started to plant vines on reclaimed land.

The mansion was constructed in the 18th century by Baron Victor Louis (who designed the Grand Theater in Bordeaux) and the estate remained in the De Seze family for many generations.

During the 1950’s, La Lagune succumbed to the economic crisis brought by the war, and the great frosts of 1956. By the time George Brunette purchased the property in 1958, only a few hectares were still in production. He undertook an extensive renovation program but was later forced to sell the property to the Ducellier family of Champagne Ayala due to heavy financial demands. The property is now owned by the Frey family whose other wine interests include Maison Jaboulet.

The Lagune vineyard is ideally located on one of the most perfect gravel hillocks and is organically farmed. It covers 80 hectares which are planted with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot.
