Extremely fresh and pungent aromas of smashed strawberries are enhanced by white pepper dust, whole green peppercorns, wet tobacco leaf and the smell of a dewy morning amidst pine trees and chaparral scrub on this wine by Chad Melville. The palate is simply stunning with juniper and pine-needle elements that slip into rich yet tart cherry and baked raspberry, proving extremely dynamic and lovely all around.

One of the more backward, tight wines in the lineup, with a vibrant texture, perfect balance and present tannins, it's going to benefit from short-term cellaring and keep for 15+ years. This cuvée is a mix of clones 114 and 115, and like everything here, was raised in neutral barrels.

Dense, powerful and also closed in itself, the Block M has the most overt density of any of the Melville 2016s. Readers will have to give the 2016 at least a few years to unwind. The 80% whole clusters are totally buried by the sheer intensity of the fruit. An underlying hard pan of clay constricts the vines, which along with the windswept hillside and tiny clusters yields a potent, naturally concentrated wine. -- Antonio Galloni

On the palate, it's full-bodied, concentrated and textural, with a deep core of fruit and a firm chassis of fine-grained tannins. This will need a few years in the cellar before hitting its stride. - William Kelley

Chad Melville makes this wine from a parcel in his family’s vineyards on the west side of Lompoc, on a small mesa where the soil is deep clay. He includes 70 percent whole clusters in the fermentation, lending the wine a lot of spice surrounding the ripe red cherry flavor. It’s salty and sweet, with a briny, nori-like note in the end, a substantial and mouthwatering pinot noir to serve with roast arctic char. (598 cases)

Suave and supple, with mouthfilling flavors of dried currant, sandalwood and berry tart. Lengthens out nicely midpalate and finishes with plenty of rich cedar and spice accents. Drink now through 2022. 598 cases made.–KM

Block M is a windswept mesa on the west side of Melville estate, lying adjacent to their Terraces block. Sitting atop a sun exposed mesa with several feet of botella clay soil, the extremity of Block M is enhanced by the gravitational pull of three exposed sides, forcing the roots to search deeper for sustenance.

Block M is made up of equal amounts of clones 114 and 115. The lesser known 114 is lush, velvety and textural with an elegantly pliant internal core, while clone 115 delivers fruit at a higher pitch and a more structurally pronounced personality. The marriage of these complementary components is what renders Melville’s Block M bottling so complete. 30% of the fruit is gently de-stemmed with 70% remaining as whole clusters.

Winery

Melville

In 1996, founder Ron Melville's desire to grow cold-climate Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah brought him to the Sta. Rita Hills where he established his winery, situated amongst the beautiful rolling hills where the grapes are grown exclusively in their three estate vineyards.

Melville currently has 120 acres under vine. The soil is mostly Lompoc dune sand, interspersed with clay loam and shallow hard pans of Monterey shale. The estate currently has 16 clones of Pinot Noir, 9 clones of Syrah, and 6 clones of Chardonnay - all on a variety of low-vigor rootstocks. All blocks are fermented in small lots and isolated through their entire period of elevage, which provides Melville’s team with an ongoing exhibition of how they can fine tune vineyard practices in order to achieve the most unmanipulated and site-specific wines possible.

Melville “grows their flavors,” using no new oak and adding only yeast.
