This rock star traditional cuvée gives up loads of black licorice, garrigue, black raspberries, and kirsch liqueur. It's powerful and full-bodied, yet elegant and seamless, with fine tannin, no hard edges, and a great finish. Despite the richness and weight, it stays weightless and elegant, with silky tannin. Don't miss it. collapse

Expansive aromas of raspberry liqueur, garrigue and licorice, plus a smoky mineral topnote that adds urgency. Takes on darker fruit character with aeration, showing impressive concentration as well as vibrant, spicy lift to the bitter cherry and black raspberry flavors. The floral note comes back strong on the impressively long finish, which is given shape by smooth, well-knit tannins. -- Josh Raynolds collapse

The nose of plum, damson, strawberry and garrigue herbs marks this out as very much a classic, young Châteauneuf. Full-bodied but fresh, it has powerful tannic weight. Well balanced through to the savoury finish.

2016 is a vintage Chateauneuf du Pape fans will want to stock up on big time, and Domaine Pierre Usseglio, with the exceptional value of their base cuvee, is pretty much a no brainer. Usseglio’s flamboyant and delicious Chateauneuf du Papes are some of the top values in the AOC, and the 2016s are the “best wines ever produced here” (Dunnuck). If you enjoy everything that Chateauneuf has to offer, you will fall in love with 2016 as it was “truly extraordinary for the Southern Rhone” (Dunnuck), and Usseglio’s traditional cuvée “typifies much of what is great about the 2016 vintage” (Suckling). Jean-Pierre and Thierry Usseglio have been pushing the boundaries at this estate since 1998, accomplishing “special things” according to Robert Parker, and working themselves “into the top echelon of Châteauneuf du Pape.” Their 2016 Pierre Usseglio Chateauneuf du Pape is 75% Grenache, and has a higher than normal 10% Mourvedre, as the ripeness of the vintage supports the added structure it brings. With beautiful ripeness a la ‘15, but with greater structure and more consistency across the appellation, this is one year you can’t go wrong with and the 2016 Pierre Usseglio Chateauneuf du Pape is one to grab by the case!

Winery

Pierre Usseglio

Domaine Pierre Usseglio was founded in Chateauneuf-du-Pape by Pierre’s father, Francis in 1948. Pierre eventually took the reigns and, since 1999, his children have run the estate. The Domaine holds 15 small vineyard plots throughout the AOC, totaling 22 hectares. Only one of those hectares is planted to white grapes. The remainder, with a mix of rocky and sandy soils, represent approximately 75% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 6% Mourvedre, 5% Cinsault, 2% Counoise and 2% Muscardin. Domaine Pierre Usseglio makes three red wines and one white.
