Chapoutier is one of the oldest wine producers in the Rhone Valley with a history that dates back to 1808. For the last two hundred years, the estate has been producing some of the greatest wines in the Rhone Valley. Quality improved and Chapoutier gained international recognition under Michel Chapoutier’s leadership. The massive negociant and winery produces single-vineyard expressions and classic wines from a range of appellations in the north and south of the valley. Today, their range also includes wines from some Roussillon appellations as well as projects in Portugal and Australia.

Michel Chapoutier, a great lover of Alsace wines, dreamt of acquiring his own domaine and creating premium and ultra premium wines. He discussed it with four wine-loving friends and in 2006, they agreed to make a fine Riesling in Alsace together.

In 2009, the “Club of 5” finally set up on 5 hectares in Le Felsberg in Bernardville, near Reichsfeld. The vineyards, planted on steep slopes, were worked diligently and meticulously. This terroir is unique in Alsace: the only terroir in Alsace composed of blue schist, located in the highest vineyards in the region (1,250 feet) and facing directly south. It is believed that vines were planted there in the 12th century by Cistercian monks, master winemakers who knew all about the importance of terroir.

The soil, made up of blue schist and variable amounts of quartz inclusions depending on the parcel, particularly suits Riesling and the first bottles of Schieferkopf were released in 2011. Today, six Alsace AOC wines, including three single vineyard selections, deliver their finest expressions.

Schieferkopf Riesling Lieu-Dit Buehl, vinified and aged in big traditional Alsatian casks, has a golden yellow color with green tints, limpid and brilliant. The nose exhibits exotic fruit aromas such as pineapple and mango which are conferred by the sunny characteristic of this south-facing slope. There are also very mineral notes of blossoms.

The attack on the palate is powerful with ripe fruit aromas. The schist=y characteristic of this soil is exhibited with a great acidity and iodized notes on the finale.

The 2016 Schieferkopf (Chapoutier) Riesling Lieu-Dit Buehl is a stunning white wine hailing from the Alsace region of France. With its pale gold hue, this Riesling is a visual delight that sets the stage for the sensory experience to come. The nose is greeted with an enchanting bouquet of meyer lemon and tangerine, which dance harmoniously with underlying notes of apple and pear. As you delve deeper, the aromas of blooming orchard flowers, menthol, and freshly tilled earth add layers of complexity and intrigue.

On the palate, the wine makes a bold entrance, showcasing its vibrant and zesty acidity. Citrus and white fruit notes take center stage, creating a symphony of flavors that captivate the senses. The mouthfeel is refreshing and invigorating, with a long, citrus-drenched finish that leaves a lasting impression.

Renowned wine expert Michel Deschodt awarded this Riesling an impressive score of 91. He suggests pairing it with a wide range of seafood dishes, as well as grilled or roasted poultry. This versatile wine is a perfect companion for any occasion.

James Suckling, another respected critic, also recognizes the quality of this wine, awarding it a score of 90. He notes that despite its four years of age, the wine displays an impressive balance of mineral acidity and caramelized peach character. The elegant finish is polished and leaves a lasting impression.

Made by Schieferkopf (Chapoutier), a producer known for their commitment to excellence, this Riesling is a testament to their expertise and dedication. With an alcohol percentage of 13.5, this wine strikes the perfect balance between power and finesse.

Whether enjoyed now or aged for another 7-8 years, the 2016 Schieferkopf (Chapoutier) Riesling Lieu-Dit Buehl is a true gem that embodies the essence of the Alsace region. Its complexity, vibrant acidity, and captivating flavors make it a must-try for any wine enthusiast.
