I was excited to retaste this wine after loving it so much at en primeur, and it has more than lived up to its promise. They seem to have poured layers of muscular black fruit into the glass in a display of Pauillac intensity and tannic prowess. It offers flavours of dark chocolate, cassis, liquorice root, black olive, coffee and cappuccino. The velvety texture is astonishing, and the layers of flavour are held together on a tightrope of power and freshness. At only 50% new oak, its intensity is coming from within. This needs to be put away and forgotten about, and then - wow - it's going to make those lucky enough to own it very happy. It's going to go for 50 years, no question. Composed of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, the 2016 Trotanoy is characteristically a little closed at this youthful stage, slowly unfurling to reveal compelling notions of chocolate-covered cherries, black raspberries and mulberries with touches of pencil lead, crushed rocks, underbrush and chargrill plus a fragrant waft of star anise. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a rock-solid frame of grainy tannins and invigorating freshness supporting the densely packed, muscular fruits, finishing very long and mineral laced. - Lisa Perrotti-Brown

A structured, powerful wine, the 2016 Château Trotanoy checks in as 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc from one of the great sites in Pomerol, a 7-hectare vineyard located on gravelly, black clay soils. This ruby/purple-hued effort gives up a brilliant bouquet of crème de cassis, blackberry and black raspberry fruits intermixed with loads of iron and crushed rock-like minerality, smoke tobacco, and graphite. It's deep, full-bodied, and concentrated on the palate, with sensational purity of fruit and balance as well as building tannins and structure. It's built for the long haul and needs a solid 7-8 years of bottle age, but it will keep for 3 decades or more.

Outrageously beautiful, deep and resonant, Trotanoy captures all the best the vintage has to offer. Super-ripe dark red and purplish berry fruit races across the palate. The firm, broad Trotanoy tannins are there, but they are nearly buried by the sheer intensity of the fruit. The 2016 is an epic wine in the making. Don't miss it. -- Antonio Galloni

Deep ruby in hue with distinctive floral, spice, incense, boysenberry, plum and cherry blossom aromas, the wine is pure silk with cushy tannins. There is a delicacy (which you should not confuse with being light) that leaves you wanting another sip to discover even more. Not decadent, but still quite sexy. The 2016 is nearly there. It has a disarming bouquet of blackberry, wild hedgerow, black truffle and crushed stone, plus a trace of pencil box in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with immense density and grip. It coats the mouth in Merlot and borrows the backbone of Lafleur. I adore the mineralité and tension flowing through the persistent finish. Does it have the profundity of the greatest vintages? I need to be convinced about that. But for certain, it is a brilliant follow-up to the 2015. -- Neal Martin

A brick house, this packs in warm fig, red and black currant paste and bitter cherry compote flavors along with smoldering tobacco, singed alder and graphite notes. The finish is quite dark, with an echo of Turkish coffee lingering after the fruit finally ebbs. Among the most backward wines of the vintage. Best from 2023 through 2040. – JM

This big, bold wine offers massive tannins and rich fruits. Dense and concentrated, it has power and ripe fruits that are balanced by acidity. It will develop impressively and be ready to drink from 2025.

Trotanoy is vinified in small concrete vats and the young wine matures in 50% new oak barrels for about 18 months. When ready, this wine shows enormous complexity and concentration. It can easily be kept 25 years or more in great vintages.

Trotanoy

Pomerol’s famous Trotanoy, whose soil was too hard to work and thus called “trop anoi” (too annoying) in medieval French, is located on one of the most beautiful parts of the Pomerol plateau. The fascinating soil diversity—half gravel mixed with clay and half deep black clay —with the presence of “machefer” or iron pan in the subsoil, brings power, depth and complexity to the wine.

Chateau Trotanoy’s vineyard was one of the few not to freeze in 1956 and today, it is comprised of very old vines, the average being close to 35 years. 90% of the vines are Merlot, the rest Cabernet Franc.

Trotanoy was acquired by Ets. Jean-Pierre Moueix, who own many other properties in both Pomerol and Saint-Emilion, including Magdelaine, Belair-Monange, La Fleur-Petrus, Lafleur-Gazin, Lagrange, Latour a Pomerol, and Hosanna.
