Still a little closed this has impressive substance and plenty of herbal and chalky character at the long finish. 80% Kirchspiel and 20% Morstein. Better from 2018.

This is a pure, fresh, extraordinarily deep and intense bouquet for a wine designated as a village wine. Ripe fruits everywhere! This is a mouthful of ripe, finessed and elegant Riesling whose texture is characterized by finely milled limestone meal. The finish is tight and well structured, pretty intense and revealing lovely grip. Take this wine to your favorite fish restaurant. It should be great even with raw fish from the ocean. One of the finest wines I have ever tasted from Mme Wechsler. Tasted October 2017.- SR

This year’s village-level offering, bottled in April, is still dominated by Kirchspiel, but includes 20% from Wechsler’s still-young vines in Morstein. Zesty, seed-inflected lime is pungently signaled on the nose, along with palpable chalkiness and a suggestion of mustard seed. These features reprise on an oily, chalk-suffused palate to convey invigorating crunch, piquancy and grip. The finish adds an unexpected, piquantly Pinot Blanc-like note of corn shoot, while supplying just enough thirst-quenching juiciness to allay the wine’s austere aspects. -- David Schildknecht
