Wine & Spirits, April 2022

This wine is powerful and dark-toned, with weighty tannins and notes of scorched earth that underline its concentrated black cherry fruit. Bold and spicy on the finish, it will be even better in a couple of years.

Situated within the UNESCO-listed Val d’Orcia Natural Park in the heart of the Brunello di Montalcino wine-making region, Castiglion del Bosco is a 5,000-acre resort and country estate with eight centuries of history. It is one of the founding members of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino created in 1967, and in 1972 was made a World Heritage Site.

Castiglion del Bosco is located in the northwest of Montalcino, where the rocky, nutrient-poor soils are perfect for yielding wines of superb structure and complexity. The estate holds 2,000 hectares of dense woods, meadows and organically-farmed crops, with 62 hectares of vineyard planted exclusively to Sangiovese.

The estate was purchased in 2003 by Massimo Ferragamo who began the restoration of both the architectural and winemaking facets of the estate. A new and modern cellar was built on two levels, with a capacity of 3,000 hectoliters.

Along with its Montalcino vineyards, Castiglion del Bosco owns a 10 hectare-estate called Prima Pietra in Riparbella, close to the Bolgheri wine area on the Tuscan coast. The vines enjoy abundant sun and ventilation, and the iron-rich, rocky soils ensure wines of superb structure. Bordeaux varieties of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot planted at a density of 9,600 vines per hectare flourish in this terroir, producing wonderfully expressive fruit.

Complexity, elegance, superb structure, and an inviting, mouth-filling palate are the hallmarks of Castiglion del Bosco’s Brunello, made from Sangiovese grown in the 42-hectare, organically managed Capanna vineyard which faces toward the Mediterranean sea—unique in Montalcino for its exposure and location.

The wine is 100% Sangiovese, fermented in stainless steel and aged for 24 months in 225 L and large-format French oak barrels.

The 2017 Castiglion del Bosco Brunello di Montalcino is a remarkable red wine hailing from the prestigious region of Tuscany, Italy. Crafted from the Sangiovese Grosso varietal, this wine showcases the true essence of the region and the exceptional quality of the grapes.

In the glass, this Brunello di Montalcino displays a deep, intense red color that is enticing and inviting. The nose is filled with an array of aromas that captivate the senses. Ripe berries and plums take the lead, accompanied by delicate floral notes and a touch of nutmeg. These aromas create a harmonious bouquet that is both alluring and complex.

On the palate, the 2017 Castiglion del Bosco Brunello di Montalcino reveals its true character. The full-bodied wine envelops the mouth with round, velvety tannins that provide a luxurious texture. The flavors of cherries and other ripe red and black fruits burst onto the palate, creating a delightful sensation. The wine's minerality and brisk acidity add a refreshing touch, balancing the richness of the fruit and creating a harmonious structure.

This Brunello di Montalcino is the result of a challenging vintage, yet Castiglion del Bosco managed to find an impressive balance. Despite the dry growing season, the wine shines with its vibrant fruit weight, oak spice, and soft tannins. With an alcohol content of 15.0%, it exudes warmth and richness.

Critics have praised this wine for its outstanding qualities. Decanter awarded it a score of 91, describing it as robust and somewhat rustic, with lots of personality. James Suckling was equally impressed, giving it a score of 94 and highlighting its chewy yet friendly nature. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate praised the wine's contemporary personality and soft, rich side, awarding it a score of 92. Vinous was also impressed, giving it a score of 93 and noting its surprising freshness and concentrated flavors. Finally, Wine & Spirits bestowed a score of 92, praising its power, dark tones, and bold, spicy finish.

The 2017 Castiglion del Bosco Brunello di Montalcino is a wine that embodies the essence of Tuscany. With its exceptional quality and complex flavors, it is a true gem that will continue to evolve and impress with age. Whether enjoyed now or cellared for a few years, this wine is a testament to the skill and dedication of its producer.
