At once deep and fleshy, but also beautifully delineated, the 2017 is incredibly satisfying. Succulent red and blue fruit, cedar, tobacco, anise and leather are some of the many notes that develop in the glass in an explosive, potent Saint-Julien that delivers the goods, and then some. Best of all, Gloria remains one of the most compelling values in all of Bordeaux. Don't miss it. Tasted three times.

Wine Spectator, April 2018
(91-94) Plum, blackberry and black currant fruit has melded nicely with graphite and anise notes in this red, which shows good energy, with a mouthwatering tar note on the finish. Really solid. -JM

Wine Enthusiast, April 2018
(WE 91-93 points) While this wine has plenty of wood flavors, the fruit weight justifies it. It is rich with good spice and balanced acidity. It will develop relatively quickly, drink from 2023.

(90-92) From another estate that’s on an upward trajectory, the 2017 Château Gloria boasts a deep ruby/purple color as well as a sensational bouquet of sweet crème de cassis, crushed violets, spicy oak, and graphite. It’s medium-bodied, has a rounded, opulent texture, ripe tannin, and more mid-palate density and depth than most in the vintage. It’s already hard to resist yet should cruise for 12-15 years. The blend is 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot and the rest Cabernet Franc, all brought up in 40% new wood.

(90-91) A tight and focused red with currants, dark berries and hints of mushrooms. Medium body, firm and silky tannins and a juicy finish.

Label

Chateau Gloria is harvested by hand, with traditional vinification and fermentation in heat-regulated stainless steel vats. The wine matures for 14 months in casks, 40% of them new. Recent vintages have featured jammy fruit, typically prune and black currant, with rich but approachable tannins.

Winery

Chateau Gloria

Chateau Gloria is one-of-a-kind, created by Henri Martin who purchased plots piece-by-piece, but exclusively from crus classified in 1855. The 50 hectare vineyard spans three areas: the middle of Beychevelle, the west of Saint-Julien and, on the north, on the border of Pauillac.

The vines include 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot on Gunzian gravel soil over a layer of clay and sand. Average vine age is 40 years.

Chateau Gloria also has a second wine, Chateau Peymartin, produced using the estate's youngest vines.
